I am looking to get a mini lop bunny some time soon. It seems like all pet stores have are non-lop (is there a term for that?) bunnies though. I've googled it, but can't find too much. I was hoping some of the animal-crazy people out there might know of some places that have more rabbits.

I want either a Mini Lop, Netherland Dwarf, or Fuzzy Lop.

contact your county's 4-H. get ahold of the rabbit club. ask if they have any member with babies.

make sure you're ready for a fuzzy before you buy it. the care for the coat is mind-blowing. i wouldn't get my fuzzy if i had to go back on it...well, maybe i would. i contacted a lady out of cary...lemme see if i can find the info:

i think i got my bunny oscar from beth hayes (its been a few years)



he is a torte holland lop, and even with a short coat his hair is EVERYWHERE
hes pretty funny to watch, but he does manage to stink up the place pretty quickly (be prepared to clean up their potty every 2 days or so)

it also is pretty expensive to get them fixed

all and all he's fun to have around, i can't wait until i move so he won't be in my bedroom bc he wakes me up almost every morning around 7:00 bc he wants to be fed.

I had a Netherland Dwarf rabbit. By the books, his color was blue, but its pretty much a blue-gray color. His hair didn't get out of control.

We had a blind cat at the time, that would occasionally clean him. It was only during the shedding season that there started to be accumulations of hair, but a quick brushing a few times a week for a bit did the trick.

Dwarves don't live that long though, so it was sad to see him go after four years. =(

The cage can get stinky pretty quick. We didn't have a wire drop through, we had a bed of hay, shavings, and cat litter in the one spot he liked to go to the bathroom a lot. It kept for longer than two days, but its a lot of cleaning. And nail trimming. He sometimes wasn't the greatest for that.

i've found a trick for trimming oscar's nails

when i give him treats (i get the bag of dried fruits/vegetables from pet smart) he usually stands up to get them, so i give them to him through the cage and when he stands up to get them i clip his nail really quickly while he isn't paying attention

getting the back nails clipped is easier said than done.... i usually wrap his body up in a towel so he can't scratch at me and go one foot at a time. needless to say, i don't clip his back nails often.

i would recommend talking with beth hayes if you're still interested in adopting a bunny, she's a breeder and she is very helpful if you have questions. she gave me food, hay, and treats to start oscar off, along with information on what he can and can't eat, etc.

I think he might have lived longer had he not contracted pasteurella (sp?). We think he picked it up because we sent him to a kennel while we went on vacation. There's no cure for it.

I have spoken to a woman named Linda Norris in Sanford who seems to have a lot of bunnies available, both Hollands and Mini Lops. I'll probably end up going with her if I can't find any through shelters.

yea ive been thinking about a mini lop or a dwarf rabbit for about 6 months now

how high can they jump? cause im allergic to animal dander, but i dont plan on rubbing my face on the floor or anything, so as long as it cant jump on the futon im not worried about it

We have a Mini Rex that can jump really high--up on couches, beds, etc. If people are eating on the couch while watching TV, she will hop up there thinking it's food for her.

Our Dwarf could barely jump over something a few inches high though. They're small and not made for jumping--one time he got left on a chair in our kitchen and was afraid to jump down from it, whereas the Rex would have just jumped.

A rabbit stranded it a kitchen chair is a really sad/humorous image to me for some reason...

It doesn't really seem like a good idea to get a pet you're allergic to unless you want to clean up all the time. Even if the rabbit isn't on the futon, there is going to be hair and stuff. I guess if you're just mildly allergic and it has to be right in your face to cause a reaction, you'd be fine though.

oscar can't jump over a foot high (that i've seen) and he can't jump onto the furniture (nor does he seem to want to) but still his hair is everywhere. when you vacuum it kicks it all up so i usually clean with my windows open. i also have to dust my room pretty often and find his hair on the other side of the room on top of my dresser, which is about 4' tall. if you are allergic to pet dander i wouldn't risk getting a rabbit.

I don't know much about how high each breed can jump, but some smaller breeds with shorter hair are Himalayan, Dutch rabbit, Britannia Petite, Dwarf Hotot, Havana (the cutest one, I think), and Mini rex.

My guess would be that the mini rex is the best for you... you're not supposed to have to brush them. They make good pets, too.

Of course, I have never actually owned a rabbit, so this is just based on my research, but I figure any info is better than no info.

Awww that belly-up pic is so cute!

I feel like I'm about to get a baby. Is that weird? I'm getting worried that I won't know how to treat a bunny since I've never had one. It's like I'm afraid he is going to hate me because I don't really know how to play with him yet. I didn't get anxious before I got my hamster last summer, but I guess that's because he's the size of a golf ball and doesn't really need much playtime interaction.

I'm probably making it sound more extreme than it actually is. It's not like I'm freaking out about it, it's just sort of a general concern.

Did anyone else feel that way before getting a bunny? Or am I just paranoid?

Probably close to 10 weeks when we got him in December. So that would make him 8 months now. The picture where I'm holding him, he was probably closer to 5 months old or so. it's really rare for him to let us pick him up and hold him like that. but if we can ever get him calmed down, he'll stay like that for as long as you like. on the whole, he doesn't like to be held or played with, but if we let him out and lay on the floor, he'll come over and climb on us and just generally have his curious moments. he's an interesting character for sure.

I have two bunnies-
Button is a 3 year old 3 lb dwarf Netherland, satin black with a white nose. She loves to hang out under our tv cabinet and when she wiggles her nose it gives away her hiding spot! She litterbox trained the 2nd time she went to the bathroom. Button jumps up on the sofa with ease even though she is so tiny. She has recently taken to running up the stairs when we dont look. In general though, she gets to run around the house (which has been cord-proofed!) because she goes back to her cage to use the litterbox.
My fiance and I recently got Jack in March. The pet store said he was a dward mix, but the dude turned out to be a monster- he's probably up to 6 1/2 pounds now. He is twice Button's size and totally obsessed with her even though she wants nothing to do with him. I think Jack is a rex mix- large ears, huge feet. My fiance left his top cage door open a few times and he jumped right out. He was a little tuffer to litterbox train, but in general rabbits are easy (I grew up with them).
Definitely get your rabbits fixed, even if they are the only rabbit in your house. Females are prone to uterine/ovarian cancer and males like to "mark" everything. Both my babies like to cuddle upside down like that picture that's been posted. They cuddle on the sofa in blankets for hours at a time . We handled them both a ton and they got to be very personable and lovable. Great pets- definitely recommend them!

Also note that with female rabbits, you should get them spayed early in their life. As they grow, they get fat and it`s difficult to spay them later on. Plus, if they aren´t spayed, they will build nests out of fur all over the house. We had a female mini lop and she was quite angry when we would vacuum up the little nests of rabbit fur she would leave...her mate was neutered, so it wasn´t like she was going to have rabbits anyway.

She shouldn't get all that much bigger. Maybe 1-2 pounds more. She's 4 months now.

I am planning on getting her fixed in about a month. Probably the second week in August so I can make sure she's OK before I have to go back to school. Do any of you have suggestions for rabbit vets around Raleigh? I know of 2, the Cary Animal Hospital and the Avian and Exotic Animal Care in Raleigh. I haven't really looked into either of them too much yet, but I will probably do that in the next week.

A spay/neuter clinic would also be nice to know about since I've heard they can save a lot of money on the spaying. I know of the Spay Neuter Assistance place on Wilmington, but I haven't looked into it any either. And I don't know if they do rabbits or just cats and dogs.

On a side note, have you ever let your bunny play with the phone book? It is really cute.

four years is young for any rabbit...I know of dwarves living much longer. There must have been cancer or something because that is young.

also dwarves can jump higher then you think...I have watched mine jump out of his playpen (which is over 3 feet tall)

ovarian cancer is rather common in female rabbits - 80% of female rabbits get it and that is why we get all our females taken care of...
