So i am a vegetarian, but having said this i basically dont eat anything you had to kill the animal to get. Meaning no fish, beef, pork, chicken... and the like.
I do eat eggs and milk.
Now... I have read that protein in plants when you start to weight lift isnt as good for you as animal meat. Because of there incompleteness. I wonder how does milk, eggs, and soy match up when it comes to substituting those against meat proteins? Would it be fair to say i can look up recomendations for meat eaters and count it 1 to 1 if i drink milk, soy, or eggs?
Any good websites on this would be helpful, but that is the main question i am trying to figure out.
Thanks 6/14/2006 5:58:08 AM |

what about whey protein?? that comes from milk and is a better protein supplement than soy at least. 6/14/2006 6:48:45 AM |

You can mix grains, veggies, and legumes to build complete proteins. This is how societies survive on beans and rice when meat's not eaten, either out of lifestyle choice or animal scarcity.

I honestly don't understand why people feel the need to jump all over veg*ns. Do you feel the need to justify your own diet?
Anyway, to give some medical information to the pet question:
I'm working toward veganism, but I still feed my cat "normal" cat food because they cannot digest proteins from anything other than animal sources and because they require taurine(which almost exclusively comes from meat sources). Trying to make an obligate carnivore into a vegetarian would be cruel. (That doesn't mean that people don't do it though.)
Dogs on the other hand are like humans in that they can go from an omnivore to a herbivore safely. 6/14/2006 10:55:25 AM |

^Sounds like my kind of group 'cause I love some tuna, turkey, a nice big slab of steak, and chicken. Fried rockfish is sooo good. Oh, and baked chicken; I cook mine in those cooking bags and they always come out so nice and tender. Stuff that badboy with some celery and green peppers give it nice flavor. Put some seasoning on it... Damn, I'm getting hungry. I think I'll cook a chicken and some fish for my fam when I go home next weekend, seeing as I don't have a stove down here.

Whey protein is a good supplement even for non-veg folk. You do dairy, so that's an easy answer.

^Would drinking a considerable amount of milk do just as well or would you recommend whey protein? 6/14/2006 4:02:42 PM |

the prob with dairy is its fat content. reduced fat milk, cheese ect...also has reduced protein.
Get the whey, mix it with one bannana, some berries, oj, and ice. Blend and enjoy.
but keep in mind that the average person can only process about 20g of protein at a time, so if you intake much more than that, it's going to waste.

I disagree...if your looking to tone up or whatever you should be taking in around 130 grams of protein per day. Take whey protein. don't overdue it, you'll fuck up y our kidneys. If you don't eat meat, then eat PLENTY of legumes(black beans, northern beans, pinto beans, lima beans) and Nuts and peanut Butter with Omega-36/14/2006 4:22:45 PM |

Joie-
No harm done, just explaining some animal nutrition facts. The whole annoyance part of my post definitely wasn't directed at you. I know a lot of vegans online who feed their cats a vegan diet and while they survive, it just isn't good for the animal.
I'll definitely be feeding my kids vegan/vegetarian even if I end up with a meat eater. When they get old enough they can make the decision for themselves.

You're an idiot. The yolk contains a significant amount of protein, and virtually all the fat and vitamins/minerals in a egg, along with the cholesterol. Eggs are one of the most complete foods there are. Think about it, it contains everything to make a baby chicken. Vegetarian or not, do yourself a favor, and eat the yolk. By the way, the cholesterol in your blood is more dependent on saturated fat intake than cholesterol intake.

I think you shmucks are misinterpreting this. For instance your body can easily tolerate 40-50 grams of protein, if you don't eat again for at least 3 hours or more. This is what most people do. All food isn't digested at once, so this gives a steady flow of amino acids into the blood stream. Shoving 20-30 grams of protein (meals or supplements) every hour isn't a bright idea, is basically what this is saying.
