Anyone had any experience with this? I know it's relatively new to Cingular, but I'm considering upgrading to it after about 3 painful years with a Nokia 3390.

it's a nice phone. only complaint i've heard is something about it not having a headphone jack...although it will act as an mp3 player.

I'd say, don't do it. I work with Cingular phones all day, and Samsungs are a constant nightmare. I'd REALLY recommend the SonyEricssons, the z520a and the w600i are both really good phones.

OK here's why I have been eyeing this one:

I really, really don't want a flip. Another candybar would be OK, but I'm getting sick of locking keys. The slider form factor seems to be the best combination of the two. And I absolutely hate any slow/sluggish UI or phonebook browsing. I want a phone that will keep up with fast keystrokes and get me a number fucking stat. So naturally I despised the SE T237 or whatever that came out a few years back, as well as the motorola v400. Maybe all the new phones are finally fast enough?

Also I just read that Nokia is due to release their slider equivalent of this model sometime this year, and should be for Cingular. Seeing as Nokia is the King of UI, I am thinking of waiting for this...

the SE w600i is a swivel phone. Not as fun as a slider, but still solves the locking keys problem. I've worked with pretty much all of the Cingular phones at work, and the SE w600i is really a very robust phone, and you can probably upgrade to it for free, if you've had the same phone for 3 years. Also, my experience with it has been that the UI runs really fast.

Well, I just watched a review of the w600i, and it ain't happening. If you want to access the number keys, not only do you have to swivel the phone (which, like most flips, may or may not be a one-handed operation depending on your grip at the time) but you have to turn the entire thing upside down in your hand after that. Bullshit. I have personally felt the sliding action of the D807 at Best Buy, and it is smooth and effortless. I know it seems like I am asking for advice and rejecting anything else, but I really don't know if there's anything out there that would do what I want. Is there a way I could get my hands on one of the old Nokia 6230's?

eBay, but the 6230 is a hella old phone. I'm talkin' MIDP 1.0 shit.

I don't get this. you hold the phone in your hand with the curved part at the top, then you hold the bottom part while you push the screen around the swivel. Then you have the keypad in your hand, and the screen is up top. Not sure how easy that all is with one hand, but I don't really get how it would end up upside down.

The way you describe it, you would actually be starting out with the phone upside down. Watch this and you will see what I mean. Basically the swivel point isn't where you would think it should be:

I mean, yeah, if you do it like the dude in the video does it, you have to turn the thing around at the end. But if you're not a tard, you can prolly figure out a way to open it that doesn't land you with an upside-down phone.

I mean, if the slider is a real deal breaker, okay, but as far as user experience, the Samsung phones in general are a headache most of the way. Nokias are definitely better for UI, but don't pack much punch on features or processing power. What it really comes down to is what your real priorities are for usage. Maybe the Samsung will fill out your particular needs quite well, but I'd be very wary around their devices if I were you, because my experience with their products has been pretty much entirely negative from day one.

Yeah, and since my fingers aren't nearly as fat as the dude in the video it shouldn't be too hard I guess. But the more I think about it, I will probably resort to a free phone and just suck it up again. The 3390 I have right now is failing hard, so I really just need a replacement ASAP. I might go for the z520a, as long as the UI is fast

yeah, it has a hell of a processor in it for such an inexpensive phone. I shit you not, there is a fully functional 3D J2ME version of Resident Evil that I think only works on the z520a and the w600i. It's pretty much a full port of the PSone game, so those phones are pretty boss on the inside.
