my dad is getting rid of his old computer and has tax information and such on his HDD and wants to be sure it is off before he gets rid of it. he says he wants a program that will overwrite the data on his HDD with random data. is there such a program that will do this?

you want DBAN

http://dban.sourceforge.net/

Pick either the cd or floppy image.

Put it on a cd or floppy.

Boot to whichever media you chose.

Pick your options.

Nuke away.

DBAN's default settings are a DoD spec wipe.

Just be careful when you use this. Make sure you pick the correct drive to wipe. Once you wipe the drive it will wipe everything and you will never get it back.
