Basically, they targeted predominantly black areas with a scheme to get some (thousands) of the votes from being counted.

Quote :
"Here’s how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in envelopes marked, “Do not forward”, to be returned to the sender. These letters were mailed to servicemen and women, some stationed overseas, to their US home addresses. The letters then returned to the Bush-Cheney campaign as “undeliverable.”

The lists of soldiers of “undeliverable” letters were transmitted from state headquarters, in this case Florida, to the RNC in Washington. The party could then challenge the voters’ registration and thereby prevent their absentee ballots being counted.

One target list was comprised exclusively of voters registered at the Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station. Jacksonville is third largest naval installation in the US, best known as home of the Blue Angels fighting squandron. Here’s how the scheme worked: The RNC mailed these voters letters in envelopes marked, “Do not forward”, to be returned to the sender. The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the Republican’s national Research Director and Deputy Communications chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and other party leaders. Attached were spreadsheets marked, “Caging.xls.” Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and their addresses.

People say all the time that Democrats do the same thing, and it might be true, but you never here of it. So either it's going unreported, or maybe they just aren't as pervasive about it. This is a pretty screwed up and racist thing though for the Republicans to do, and if true, it really doesn't help their image.

Are you sure you are not mixing up the parties? It doesn't strke me as wise for the Republicans to be disenfranchising young white zenophobic males, such as occupy the navy. Military individuals tend to be somewhat religious and tend to come from the south, eager to vote red.

Now, if you told me the Republicans were disenfranchising criminals or black people then that would make sense.

What? Of course they do the same thing and perhaps if you read something other than liberal blogs you might have heard of it.

http://www.google.com/search?q=democrat+voter+fraud is probably a good place to start if it really interests you that much.

There were 1,800+ people on the list and like 50 were in the Navy. There were almost all African-American. I know it may seem shocking but its being blown out of proportion to sound much worse than it really is. Apparently the list is of registered voters that the RNC did not think were valid (double-ups, deceased, etc). If it were exactly the fraud tactic talked about in the original post it wouldn't shock me though.

I'm not really sure if any of this is true or not. If it is true, I'll say right now that it doesn't surprise me.

Huh?

Gore had 500,000 or so MORE votes than Bush nationally in 2000, but Bush had 3 million or so MORE votes than Kerry in 2004.

So, Gore's margin of loss in 2000 was a negative 500,000.

The winning/losing though didn't matter nationally, since it was the individual states that decided the election, which is what I was trying to subtly point out.

" Breaking: Shirley Ward Arrested August 25, 2006

President of the Tennessee Federation of Republican Women, Shirley Ward, has been arrested on voter fraud charges. Ward, best known as one of the major contributors to the GOP grassroots group TeamGOP, is the mother of TeamGOP founder Jeff Ward. Both Wards are active in politics in Tipton Co.

Update: It appears the race in question was a Tipton County Commission race, although futher details are sketchy at this point. Ward did surrender herself to authorities, which according to the Nashville Post, would be the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation in this case."
