it's a 98 Audi A6 and apparently the rear bumper is plastic
any ideas if I can fix it by myself or do I need to take it to a body shop (and if so, any recommendations?)

Take it to a body shop. You're gonna need a new bumper cover...it is indeed plastic, as are damn near all of 'em these days, with the exception of a lot of trucks.

as long as the fender isnt buckled, it shouldt be more than a few hundred for a new cover and paint
