The piracy one is even better when you are watching it on a downloaded or pirated DVD.

Beta is still the gold standard for video tape.

It's never been about what's better, though. If that had been the case, laser discs would have taken the world by storm. I still wonder what made DVD's catch on.

yeah, seems like portability is what made DVDs catch on as opposed to laser disc... i mean, you could store DVDs in your CD rack whereas laser discs required the old record storage boxes that nobody's used since the 70's

So laser disks are better than DVDs as far as quality? How so? (Actually asking this out of curiosity)

I only had one laser disk experience, and this was back in the eighth grade during a social studies class. We watched some documentary that complimented out book "A More Perfect Union".

I don't think that they're better than DVD's, especially the newer ones. I was just saying that the reason VHS ruled as long and as hard as it did over Beta and Laser Discs is that it was cheaper.

DVD's were more expensive and somehow managed to replace VHS, and I don't have an explanation as to why other than Vivid's "change the camera angle" feature in their porn. I don't think that alone has the mainstream appeal that could replace something as dominant as VHS was.

Haha maybe it is because you don't have to rewind a DVD.

You know back in the day when I watched VHS all the time, the picture quality didn't look that bad. But now if I watch, it is almost unbearable compared to DVD.

You don't have to rewind a DVD and you can easily jump to chapters. DVD cases took up about 1/2 the space. DVDs don't wear out like VHS tapes. DVDs made watching movie extras (deleted scenes/commentary/behind the scenes/etc.) extremely easy. No more "head cleaners". Clean pause. Clean slow-mo/ffw. Etc. Etc.

^beat me to it. They even sold special VHS rewinding machines to reduce the wear and tear on your VCR.

i'm curious to see what wins out between blu-ray and hd-dvd

but yeah, i fucking hate that there are previews on a dvd. If i'm paying for a personal copy of a movie or anything for that matter I shouldn't be subjected to a lifetime of advertising for doing so.

i love that the previews they use only make sense at the time... like when they say "coming soon to a theater near you" or even better "coming to DVD on July 24th!" and i'm watching the dvd like 2 years later.

- VHS was very outdated and it was time for a new format, the early adopters jumped all over it. Small disc rather than a big bulky tape, more attractive packaging, and the life of a disc is presumedly much longer than that of tape.
- OAR. Although the fullscreen lovers were a plenty, the DVD craze showed that there was a much larger interest in OAR than previously thought. OAR has now gone from being a niche to being the standard.
- DVD-ROMs. Buy a computer, get a free DVD player basically. How many people started their DVD viewing with their computer?
- PS2 and Xbox. If you didnt start with the DVD-ROM, you probably watched DVDs on a video console for awhile. Again, buy one thing and get a free DVD player.
- Sell through. When VHS came out, studios agreed to have a "rental only" period on new releases. So when a new movie came out, there was a period where you could either rent it or buy it for about $90-$120. No ones gonna spend that much on one movie. With DVD, movies were available to own on release date, so the people that buy movies bought them up front, rather than having to wait 3 months and forgetting about the movie.

I remember having laserdisc players in our school. We only had one or two, and they hardly ever worked.

I agree with this thread. I fucking hate ads. I mean, they have like 20 minutes of ads in the theater. They have a 5 minute commercial breaks for every 15 minutes of TV. They have ads after every song on the radio. THEY HAVE ADS ON FUCKING BILLBOARDS!!! THEY HAVE ADS EVERYWHERE ON THE INTERNET!!! THEY EVEN ARE STARTING TO PUT ADS IN THE GODDAMN VIDEO GAMES!!! When is this shit going to end? Can't they keep the ads for their stupid ass movies, most of which will flop out of the DVDs. Christ, is that so much to ask?
