Honestly, I think the arrest is the best thing that could have happened to him in terms of fame.

well the entirety of hillsborough in front of campus is being ripped up as we speak and replaced with the roundabouts and median whatnots that are described at length in this thread.

Wow. $360.

Quote :
"Willoughby himself questions how serious the crime is. And workers for the construction company that owns the barrels say they were sad to see the monster go and don't want anyone criminally charged."

Quote :
"The owner of the barrels, Hamlett Associates, a Climax, N.C.-company, told Everett it wasn't interested in pressing charges, said Daniel Hall, a project manager for the company.

"I kind of wanted the Barrel Monster back," Hall said, adding that the monster and maybe a clone around the construction zone would be more effective than the existing barrels in deterring traffic."

Quote :
"Hall, the project manager, said he'd like to get in touch with Carnevale, uliveandyouburn or whomever to compliment a job well done.

Next time, Hall said, just ask for the barrels. The company would have handed them over. "

it needs to be rebuilt and reinstalled

great for school spirit and incoming freshmen coming in to get interested in the revitalization of the street

it would also bring some people to the street to get their picture taken, etc furthering exposure of the rebuilding project

plus it's excellent public relations and advertising for both the barrel makers and the monster maker

Something tells me this guy isn't your typical "ask first before doing something" kind of guy.

I agree with marko. We must rebuild! Except this time it must be fire breathing and fully self-mobile.

It really depends on how, who, and when he asked as to whether or not they would have given him the barrels. Most construction guys are good people. Crass, yes, but they are good guys.

Yeah, sounds like an after-the-fact assessment to me. No way no how the guy hands the barrels over.

"Can I have three barrels for an art project."

the only response to this that plays out in my mind is:

"Get lost punk."

Of course everyone likes the guy now. The only thing missing from the delayed reaction is an official public opinion poll

here's an update: there's no shortage of people who are dumb enough to pull into an intersection and stop even though traffic is backed up on the far side, so when the light cycles, the idiots are blocking the whole intersection

^THAT IS THE FUCKING TRUTH

I'm glad they finally paved the road near Woodburn, but having it narrow down to 1 lane suuucks.

It's a convenient excuse for being late to work though

the traffic sign near Woodburn says something like "Oberlin detour begins 8-14". Does this mean the whole intersection by the belltower will be closed starting then or something less major?

Closing one of the 5 biggest intersections on campus for students in dorms will cause lots of traffic woes

i would hope that it means that you can't turn left onto oberlin after that point and that you just turn at that new cut-through street. but if the sign's at woodburn, i would think that it means they're going to shut down the intersection. that is going to be messy. glad i don't live in that direction anymore.

That only means that Oberlin is going to be closed on the short stretch where Player's Retreat is from Hillsborough Street to the new cut-through Pullen Road extension. The Pullen-Hillsborough intersection will remain open. If anything that intersection will now actually be a "functional" true intersection with one road crossing over another.

Also as of 7pm, Tuesday, August 11, Founders Drive (the bus lane behind the library) will close indefinitely for work related to Hillsborough Street. Wolfline stops at Scott Hall, DH Hill Library, and Patterson will not be served.

Awful.

I saw 2 accidents between the bell tower and Mitch's around lunch, and all sorts of other issues.

Later on Hillsborough street a dude took out ~5 traffic cones in his SUV while talking on his cell too, that was hilarious.

I walked down a side street and didn't realize that it was the construction staging area until I realized it was closed to traffic on the other end. It's bad when Hillsborough is so torn up that it looks like a construction staging area on both sides.

On Wednesday I was unlucky enough to get stuck in a section between two parts where they had narrowed the road to one way traffic with sign-men (guys holding the slow/stop signs) at each part.

Example (X is my vehicle):
=======-------===X=====-------=======

I was sitting there for about 20 minutes because they had some kind of delivery going on. It was right by North Hall and after about 10 minutes I resorted to just turning my truck off. Couldn't go anywhere as it was one way traffic either way with traffic to the left of me and a brick wall on my right. I swear, whomever decided to schedule that at like 6:30 in the afternoon was an idiot.

It's hilarious when they let traffic back up and then the honking begins, people start getting out of their cars to walk around, and people just resort to turning the street into a giant parking lot.

I sure hope some knowledgeable person or persons properly checked the area around the Belltower. The work crews sure seem to be doing a lot of ground-destabilizing destruction and construction all around the tower--I admit that it concerns me a bit.

I just want our Belltower to stay forever upright.

i'm sure the belltower is fine. there is a reason people in construction have degrees, other than just wall decoration

^ I hope you're right--but don't get cocky. Scores of structural failures and other technological catastrophes happened on projects that had been signed off on by people with degrees in construction engineering and others decorating their walls.

Indeed, all it takes is one guy on a Friday afternoon that wants to peace out. Then someone shows up at his office wanting a last minute approval on something, he takes a quick look, and says "yeah yeah fine". The rest is a huge disaster.

naw, they're on target

one of the reasons why i decided not to go to grad school was because i looked at my wall and i decided that i had enough pictures in frames

my only other possibility was to have the car detailed with my thesis

but that just seemed silly

I'm not saying it happens in any kind of frequency, but the possibility is there. Granted that possibility is very slim, but never underestimate the power of stupid/lazy people. Always assume someone is going to screw up and take your work seriously. Especially as an engineer, people's lives and your career can depend on it.

If you dismiss the possibility entirely and don't have people checking over things then there's a fail boat waiting to run aground.
