so i think i'm going to have to have my wisdom teeth pulled in the next week or so, given how much it has been hurting lately.

for those of you that have had the surgery...how bad was it? how long was recovery? are you concious during the procedure? how long did it take?

thats the only surgery ive ever had, so i have nothing to compare it to....i didnt think it was that bad.

it varies person to person....i had about a day of doing nothing, and then i was able to function fine, but not eat certain foods.

I was knocked the hell out, and it was a great week, aside from only being able to eat mushy foods for a few days. I took a week off, had almost no pain (it was like I had been chewing gum for too long and my jaw was really tight and kind of sore), and no problems. By day four I was eating macaroni and cheese (slowly and carefully, of course).

Everyone told me it would be horrible. It was actually the most relaxing week I've had all year.

they give you lots of drugs so you shouldn't feel anything

depending on your doctor you may or may not have swelling and bruising on your face (cheek area)...I didn't have either, but some other people I know had slight swelling and like yellow/brown cheeks

also, you're not supposed to eat solid food for like a week, but I was eating solids after like 3 days

just play it by ear, it's not a big deal, you'll be fine

it didnt hurt at all.

my face was puffy for like 3 days, and i had bruises for a week.

i didnt even take pain meds after day 1 which net me a bottle of vicodan(sp) w00h00

how bad was it?
The first several hours afterward were not all that fun. I didn't feel that much but constantly replacing bloody gauze was a bit unnerving. It really only started to hurt a few days later when the sockets that were left behind were still swollen and bulging against the stitches that they put in. All pain went away after the stitches popped. The (medicated) pain of removal is really worth it if your wisdom teeth are already hurting.

how long was recovery?
A week IIRC. I did have a socket that healed a bit funny. It wasn't a dry socket and it didn't hurt at all but I did have a small crease in my gums where they had gone in to extract the tooth. It finally grew back to normal in about 6-7 years.

are you concious during the procedure? how long did it take?
No. A few hours. You are in and out on short order..

The procedure is infinately easier if your teeth have already came through. I haven't had mine out yet, but I just talked to a dentist, and he said that since they were fully grown, i was looking @ maybe an hour of extraction and 1 day of recovery. Still haven't decided if i'm gettin em out or not. also, he said i could get local and stay awake or get knocked out...my choice

its different for diff people, but mine came in fine, with hardly any pain. The only reason that they recommend getting them removed now is b/c they are hard to keep clean. I don't really think i need them out, so I don't know if i'll do it or not. Plus its more expensive to get them cut out before they come in....they probably just want extra $texas.

just hope your dentist cleans the socket out and doesn't sew any gum tissue back up. it happened, led to infected jaw, in the hospital for days, and jaw surgery

the procedure isn't bad at all - the anticipation is a hell of a lot worse than the actual surgery. I only had two wisdom teeth, my appointment was at 9:30 and I was out of there by 10:30 (the surgery itself was only for a few minutes, but I was knocked out for about 30 minutes). The sedation was fantastic - the only thing I remember is vaguely realizing that a tooth was popped out, and even then I couldn't give a damn.

I'm not sure if I just had a really good oral surgeon, but I hardly needed pain meds. The surgery was on a Thursday, I weaned myself back onto semi-solid foods the next day (pita and hummus) and was eating regularly by that Sunday.

i had all four of mine removed by a dentist, which, in hindsight, wasn't the best idea. i should've gone to an oral surgeon. all four had "hooked" roots, so it made the procedure longer. it took around two hours to get it done, then another three hours to get the pain medication filled. those three hours weren't the most pleasant.

I had all four of mine removed and it didn't take more than 15 min i think... of course they were already partially out and were sort of growing in the right direction and not totally the wrong way

I think since they were partially out i didn't have much swelling and prob was okay in a week

you go stay awake or be put under. I had all 4 removed at once. I opted to be put under. Woke up, thought it was about 5 minutes later but it was actually over an hr later and it was done. I went home went to sleep, woke up, went back to sleep. And then I was fine. Ate soft foods for like a day, day and half (think i was eating steak on the second day) and I was fine.

my sister on the other hand got a dry socket and didn't stop bitching for over a week

I didn't read everyone else's... but I had a bad experience for about a week with it :-( I

-dry sockets
-I don't weigh much at all so everytime I took the prescription pain killers I was barfing moments later
-my face swelled up so much that I looked like a chipmunk and refused to leave my house.
-short and sweet, I was pitiful

My boyfriend however, had it done a year later and that night he was out to dinner with my family....

so it's all relative - good luck though!

i had twilight anesthesia, so i was partially conscious. you're awake but you don't feel anything or really remember anything except being awake. took almost no time to recover as opposed to the hour of grogginess following regular anesthesia.

i was in and out of my dentist's office in a couple hours.

Oh yeah, and I was on an IV and anesthesia and my parent's had to carry my (basically) drunk ass to the car, put me in bed and I was OUT for the rest of the day/night.

My mom always jokes about how I was in the chair and started crying and everyone started asking "what's wrong, does something hurt", etc. and I was like "nope.... just crying" and my mom joked... "well, looks like we've got a crying drunk here"

(she works in surgery so she's seen all sorts of wierd responses)

Yeah, I have to get mine out soon, too. My dentist told me that it will only take them about thirty minutes, and I could even get mine out during the school year - she said it's so easy that you can go in on a Friday late morning/early afternoon and be ready to go back to work or school on Monday.

Surprisingly easy for me. Only had to take a single motrin for recovery the next day.

I was eating solid foods (Mac and Cheese) later that day and went to Burger King the next day.

Yes, I had local anesthetic, which was actually the most painful part of the whole ordeal.

How long did it take?

Whole process (including the video they made me watch) was ~2 hours for all 4 teeth to be removed.

yea the surgery was definitely the easiest i've had. It was in a dental and cosmetic surgery clinic so all these trophy wife nurses were running around. One of them sets me down and starts asking questions, the next thing I know somebody is carrying me to my car.

As far as after the surgery, the taste takes some getting used to, but it's nothing horrible. The biggest problem I had was getting sick from the anaesthesia.

My boss had 2 taken out yesterday afternoon and he is back at work today.

it's just kinda annoying when you're trying to eat, but you miss your mouth with whatever utensil you're using, and subsequently spill food. mine didn't hurt bad. i didn't take the drugs but once because i didn't like feeling disoriented. enjoying milkshakes and smoothies and mushy foods for a few days isn't bad at all yo.

I was conscious for mine, but apparently it was highly abnormal. He gave me twice the dosage of whatever schwagged out benzo they give you and I was still awake enough to talk. I remember talking while he was ripping a tooth out of my skull and he was like, "Don't talk right now."

I guess I was so fucked up I forgot I was in surgery or something. Either way, even if you are somewhat conscious for it you will not care (Especially if they give you a nitrous/benzo combination).

You can die from an infection from any surgery, so you should always be careful, and keep an eye on what your body is doing.

for me, it wasn't bad at all. I had no pain after surgery, only felt bloody in my mouth. I took pain reliver every 4 hours , and changed the gauze. I was conscious during the surgery and it took about 30 mins. I had only drinks and soft food in the first two days to avoid infection. it took a week to get used to missing teeth. (i felt like there was hole on my mouth)

Yeah, it sucked for me; excruciating pain from about an hour out to two days. Vicodin did not work. Percocet was a little better. I'd have to say it was a far cry from the "slight discomfort" my oral surgeon told me I would experience.

Just got my wisdom teeth taken out this morning... I was asleep so the operation went by like nothing. When I finally woke up, I was stumbling out of the operating room as they rolled me out in a wheel chair.

Got home around 9am. Feel asleep 'til about noon. Woke back up with bloody drool all over my pillow. The gauze they gave me wasn't enough. I'm a drooler.

Surprisingly, I don't feel that much pain. Just a little discomfort. How soon can I consume some fluids or soquids (like a frosty... or yogurt, jello, pudding)? I haven't eaten now for over 15 hours. And my stomach is growling. They didn't give us that much info. Just a sheet of paper with some post-operation precautions.

Right now, I can't feel my chin or bottom lip. It was worse earlier because I couldn't feel the tip of my tounge either. But now I can feel my tounge. I probably have a case of paresthesia. Hopefully it's one of those minor ones that heals withing a few weeks and not the permanent ones. That would suck because I would go around drooling for the rest of my life.

being a person who has had surgery three times, wisdom teeth removal is not bad at all

you aren't actually "put under" in that they don't control your vitals, but you are definitely unconscious. when i woke up from the valium/demmorol (sp) i thought they hadn't even started the surgery.

i actually went out the same night i had surgery, but it varies from person to person. as long as you keep your sockets clean, you should be fine.

^^ You don't have any pain yet because you can't feel anything. You can probably eat but don't eat anything with a lot of spices and salts. Also eat something that is about room temperature or just a little warm. I had mashed potatoes. I would limit dairy products in case you are like me and find out you are allergic to the anesthics (that was great fun).

Ughh, I just got mine out this morning at 11 and it makes me feel like a damned elephant stood on my face. I still can't feel anything at all from my lips donw to about the middle of my throat. I didn't feel a thing, they gave me great anesthetic (oral and IV - I got both) and one of my teeth was worse than they originally thought and it had already grown down into the bone - and they just x-rayed them 4 weeks ago. All i've had to eat is strawberry jello, a chocolate pudding and some sprite, but I am starving - I havent eaten since 7pm on Sunday.

I can't tell which it is yet, but either the Oxycodone or the anesthesia from earlier today are making me nauseous as hell. I'm guessing moreso the Oxy, but it's not even helping me at ALL. I took one of them around 1:30PM and 2 of them around 10PM and I havent noticed any difference, I am not even sleepy. But i made a list of food i want, pronto:
bo's, kanki, krispy kremes, red lobster garlic cheese biscuits, neo china garlic chicken with broccoli, outback steakhouse, movie popcorn, some spaghetti with meat sauce and some shrimp. I feel like Homer Simpson when we went on the baseball team Hunger Strike

^^ I think approximately 25% of people have a bad reaction to the Oxyc, so you may be better off just taking a hugh dose of regular pain pills

Pray you don't get a dry socket, if you're feeling the need to take pain meds already.
