NHL draft is tomorrow from 6-9 PM on OLN. It looks like there is a good chance that the Jack Johnson to Pittsburgh deal might go down.

Here's who the team has under contract for next season:

Rod Brind'Amour $3.99 million
Oleg Tverdovsky $2.5 million
Bret Hedican $2.432 million
Mark Recchi $1.995 million
Cory Stillman $1.75 million
Ray Whitney $1.5 million
Josef Vasicek $1.15 million
Kevyn Adams $725,000
Andrew Ladd $688,940
Cam Ward $684,000
Anton Babchuk $675,500

Staal, Cole, and Williams are restricted free agents, so expect them back. Recchi's contract is listed above, but there is a team and player option on it. Hedican has indicated that he will re-sign with the team, and Wallin has shown interest in re-signing, but the talk is that he may return to Europe to play. At this point I would say Weight, Recchi, Cullen, and Gerber are the most likely to depart. Kaberle could go as well, but I'm really hoping they will bring him back. The goalie pool looks pretty thin, so Gerber could get big money from someone. I would expect Wesley to retire.

I would love to see Cullen back, but I don't really have any hope for Weight. It's been known from the beginning that he is interested in returning to St. Louis. The Cullen situation is tough. He says he wants to return, but with the season he had, a lot of teams are going to be offering him more money than Rutherford.

Cullen is goin gto get PAID... by someone other than the 'Canes. We have too many players to sign and he will command a shit ton in the open market. I don't think Cullen is as attached to living in the area like some of the others are.

I really hope we re-sign Kaberle, A Ward, and Cullen. Like others, I'm not too worried about re-signing Staal, Cole, and Williams, but how much $$ are they going to be getting is the big question.

"The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed captain Rod Brind'Amour to a five year deal.

The deal will pay the veteran centre $4 million in each of the first three years, and $3 million in each of the last two years, and is in lieu of the 2006-07 option on his prior contract.

"There is no substitute for having a player as dedicated and determined as Rod to lead the team," said Hurricanes president and general manager Jim Rutherford. "His leadership and play on the ice were key components to winning the Stanley Cup, and his commitment to the Hurricanes organization and the community off the ice makes him a great ambassador for our team and the Triangle area."

The Professional Hockey Writers' Association selected Brind'Amour, 35, as the 2005-06 recipient of the Frank J. Selke Trophy for the Best Defensive Forward at Thursday's NHL Awards.

During the regular season, the Ottawa, Ont., native played in 78 of 82 regular-season games and scored 31 goals and 39 assists (70 points) to rank tied for second on the team in goals and fourth on the team in points. Brind'Amour's 19 power-play goals ranked tied for first on the team and eighth in the NHL.

Brind'Amour's 59.1 faceoff-win percentage ranked third in the NHL. Brind'Amour took 347 more faceoffs than any other NHL player (Joe Thornton ranked second with 1,798), finished the season with a plus-8 rating and led all NHL forwards averaging 24:17 time on ice, 1:32 more than the next nearest forward (Brad Richards - 22:45).

In the postseason, Brind'Amour ranked first on the team and second in the NHL with 12 goals, including an NHL second-best six power-play markers. His 18 postseason points ranked third on the team and tied for sixth among NHL players. Brind'Amour posted a plus-9 rating in Carolina's 25 playoff games to rank third on the team and tie for ninth in the league.

Since breaking into the league with St. Louis during the 1989 playoffs, Brind'Amour (6' 1", 205 lbs.) has scored 50 goals, 57 assists (107 points) and accumulated 89 penalty minutes in 141 postseason games.

The Hurricanes acquired Brind'Amour from Philadelphia on Jan. 23, 2000, along with goaltender Jean-Marc Pelletier and a second-round draft pick, in exchange for Keith Primeau and a fifth-round draft choice. Since joining the Hurricanes, Brind'Amour has scored 104 goals and added 166 assists (270 points) in 397 regular-season games with, and he has twice been the recipient of the Hurricanes' Steve Chaisson Award for determination, dedication and proving to be an inspiration to his teammates.

In 1,187 regular-season NHL games, he has scored 382 goals, earned 599 assists (981 points) and accumulated 944 penalty minutes with St. Louis, Philadelphia and Carolina.

The Blues selected Brind'Amour with the ninth overall pick in the first round of the 1988 NHL Entry Draft.

He represented Canada at the 1998 Winter Olympics, was named to the 1990 NHL All-Rookie Team and played in the 1992 NHL All-Star Game."

Also, big news out of Edmonton:

Quote :
"The Edmonton Oilers are in the midst of what could be a severe shakeup to their roster just days after their Game 7 Stanley Cup Final loss. NHL sources indicate that Oilers' defenceman Chris Pronger has requested a trade from the club."

what about big joe? he is a lovable oaf but he wouldn't be a great loss if he left.

i really hope they re-sign frankie.

as far as jack johnson is concerned, the penguins need defensive help BAD. it would work out for both teams if johnson ever leaves UM.

Big deal just went down in the Southeast:

Quote :
"Sportsnet.ca -- Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo has been traded to the Vancouver Canucks in a package that includes Todd Bertuzzi.

Sportsnet has learned the Canucks are getting Luongo, defenceman Lukas Krajicek and a sixth-round draft in exchange for Bertuzzi, defenceman Bryan Allen and goaltender Alex Auld.

More details to follow …"

Meh, if he did, it wasn't by much. Or maybe since he didn't have the greatest of rookie seasons, expectations were set a little lower.

look at stillman.....he put up 7 fucking points when he won the cup w/ TB

yet with the canes, hes a star

my end point is that the coaching+managers here are the best in the leauge, while our players arent quite the best (but close).

It's less than he made this year. No worries.

The Luongo deal is HUGE. With a real team in front of him, he could destroy everyone.

its true that the organization saw Staal being an annual 100 pt guy they didn't see it happening in his sophomore season, he is 2 season ahead of schedule. They expected more of the pace Nathan Horton is taking on South Beach

alright, its draft day. Nashville is dangling Shea Webber for the number 2 pick. Shearo has his choice of Johnson or Webber for the pick. "My allegiance is to the Carolina Hurricanes, but if they want to trade me, by all means trade me," he said. "I want to go some place where they really want me." Thats from Johnson. We obviously really wanted him, we threw 3 rookie max deals at him. IF he does get traded and plays next season then it was because he refused to play for us. Which there has been alot of talk that his dad refuses to have a son work for Karmanos. He might very well be another Lindros dad.

That being said, I hope the Canes draft Robyn Figgrin and Kai Kantola this weekend. COLTON YELLOW HORN Unsigned Free Agent '06

Jordan sounds like a stud, and i think he fits with our schemes. Losing Johnson would suck, but with our style of play, defensemen are expendable i think. Just get a few fast young guys in the later rounds would offset losing Jack.

Rutherford has said on multiple occasions that he is not a fan of drafting defensemen. He would rather draft forwards, and sign free agents to fill holes on defense, as he feels defensemen take too long to develop. This would certainly fit with that line of thought.

auld isn't the big deal to me, Bert and Luongo cancel each other out, the steal of this trade is Bryan Allen. lets just say Florida does in fact get Jovonavski in Free Agency. They have a blue line of EDJO, Sean Hill, Bryan Allen, and Bouwmeester. Through in Van Ryn and Rick Jackman, that is a damn good defense.
