What kind of reception does he get?
Despite this being a series b/t my two favorite teams I think it is one of the most intriguing of the year. Great pitching matchups. If there is one series all year to see this is it.
Games are in HD all 3. INHD tonight; ESPN2HD Wednesday; ESPNHD Thursday (all 7pm)

It wouldn't be so bad but pedro has done a pretty good job of talking trash since he left...not so much about the city but about the organization. Considering the organization let him do whatever he wanted while he was there(much like manny now), the shit-talking is not needed. 6/27/2006 12:14:13 PM |

^^ no way. Maybe most important but not best. Pedro had the best 5 year period in the HISTORY of baseball, without a doubt, in Boston. It's really not even close. The numbers he put up in the American League East, in the steroid era are almost unbelievable.

Yeah, because the Sox treated him like absolute shit. I'm a Mets fan 1a but also a Sox fan 1b and I was pretty pissed they treated him like that... until he signed with the Mets!

Schilling has had a great career but he's just barely HOF consideration (his exposure and likeability are what make people think he's much better).
However, no one has had a better career through this point than Pedro, and if he follows the trend he has set for his career so far he will be the greatest pitcher in baseball history, without a doubt.6/27/2006 12:36:38 PM |

Pedro had a 7 year stretch (6 of those in Boston) at 2.18 ERA, 118 wins, and 36 losses. No one in the history of the sport can match that, especially taking into account what era it was done in and which league.
During those 7 years Pedro had the lowest ERA in baseball in 6 of them (though one he didn't pitch enough innings to qualify b/c of injury). During this stretch only ONE pitcher had a lower single season ERA then Pedro had throughout the 7 years, and that was Roger Clemens in 1997 (though Pedro had a lower ERA then him that year).
He wins 7 out of every 10 starts in his career. He has the best adjusted ERA in baseball history and it's not even really close.
The guy is not only the best Boston pitcher ever but it can be argued he is the best PITCHER ever and easily in the Top 5...
^ Cy Young wasn't spectacular. He pitched a ton. He also had the most losses in ML history as well as wins. Clemens is tougher because of longevity. There is no doubt that Pedro will finish with better pure numbers (such as ERA, ERA+, winning %, etc.) but Clemens will have far better cumulative numbers (wins, appearances, Ks, etc)

Personally, I find him more fun to watch now that he has lost about 5-6 mph off his fastball. How smart he is and how he is always a step or two ahead of the hitters just blows me away. The guy is my size without a ML fastball anymore and he still dominates guys. It's just unreal..
^ ha seriously.. my parents have it out in California and it's on DirecTV but not here.

Of course. I mean just your casual fans. People know he is great but they fail to realize just how great he is in historical context. When people thik of the greatest ever they go back to players like Sandy Koufax, Christy Mathewson, Warren Spahn, and Walter Johnson... Pedro is better than all of them.6/27/2006 1:38:03 PM |

Are you guys fucking serious about Clemens?
No way he put together a better 5 year stretch than Pedro did...
Clemens is one of the more overrated pitchers of all-time. He's had a lengthy career and he's been dominant at times, but he's not on Pedro's level.
yes he was spectacular early in his career, then he got fat and lazy... then he dominated in toronto cause he was pissed at the red sox for calling him a fat piece of trash... then he had some marginal seasons in new york, then he had 2 pretty incredible seasons in Houston.
Clemens has never been a big game pitcher either. He's like the Karl Malone of the MLB. In game 7 there's at least ten other pitchers in the league i'd go with before i took Clemens... 6/28/2006 10:52:48 PM |

Roger Clemens debuted mere months after I was born and the guy won a Cy Young when I was 20 years old. Pedro? Yeah, he's been untouchable. But I was already giggling at the word "sex" by the time he cracked the MLB. He's not going to be around for another ten years, either. 6/29/2006 12:09:24 AM |

See I dont understand why Bonds gets such a bad rap for using steroids and breaking records...
then a guy like Clemens uses steroids to dominate the game at age 42 and everyone is like "wow, what a hero"
give me a break. Clemens is every bit as big of an asshole as Bonds is too... and to top it all off the faggot had bleached blonde highlights at the age of 40.
I dont understand why anyone would like that piece of shit and then call Bonds an ass and a cheater...
Total double standard.
All of Clemens "greatness" stems from a (steroids induced) lengthy career and an amazing start early in his career. It's like people are just willling to look past all of his big game meltdowns and washed out seasons where he never bothered to get into shape.
Saying that Clemens in his prime was better than Pedro in his is just asinine. Completely ridiculous, really...

^ Yeah the AL is embarassing the NL this year.
Back to the Clemens vs Pedro thing. I was thinking about this and decided just to look at their stats and damn if you guys aren't right on about Pedro. He is definitely a more dominant pitcher than Clemens. Pedro's WHIP numbers are incredible. I always knew he had great stats, but I never realized how amazing they were. If he can keeping pitching strong into his early 40s, get to 300 wins, and keep his career ERA around 2.75, then I don't see how anyone could doubt his place in baseball history. Especially considering the era in which he pitched. 6/30/2006 11:51:51 AM |

the rocket was not a popular sports figure until the past few seasons....
its really funny how these things work when people can only remember whats happened in the last 5 days.
Clemens has always been a polarizing guy and he had fucking blonde highlights. He's a dick, he's a whiner, and he's overrated.
His career totals are fantastic but they grossly exaggerate how good of a pitcher he really was. If it wasn't for steroids prolonging his career for so long he wouldn't have 300 wins, wouldnt be dropping 2.00 ERA's at age 42, and we wouldn't even mention him in the same breath as Pedro.
Nothing against clemens, im objectively looking at his numbers... i just dont understand why he is worshipped and bonds is villianized when they are very similar players and people. 6/30/2006 3:29:46 PM |

He's definitely overrated. I'd want him on my team, but you better believe I wouldn't be paying him a 3rd-world-country per month, which is what he's getting.
Seriously, a substantial amount of world hunger, disease research, or 3rd world education centers could be put into motion with the amount of money this tool is making per month. I firmly believe in the American dream and give props to niggas making millions, but only if they deserve it.
This fag waited until halfway into the season to try and pick a team that would win the World Series this year (as if he doesn't already have a ring) which proves it's not about passion. It's about money, and ONLY money, and it's disgusting. 6/30/2006 4:07:18 PM |

I dislike Clemens for a TON of reasons but that wasn't the way it worked. He wasn't offered arbitration because it would have been FAR less then his market value. Because of that he couldn't resign with the Astros until AFTER May 1. He never seriously thought about going elsewhere... 6/30/2006 4:12:06 PM |
