Spin Cycle and Cycling Spoken Here both have scheduled group rides throughout the week. I would imagine that Flythe probably does as well. Check their websites. 7/4/2006 10:59:24 PM |

Bicyclists have NO buisiness riding on Lake Wheeler, 10-10 or Holly Springs road. It's just asking for someone to get killed. And guess who loses when it's bicycle versus car? 7/5/2006 1:44:28 PM |

Group.
I rode a 100k ride yesterday and rode about 30 miles with a team doing 1 mile pulls at 20-21 mph. I had no problem keeping up with them.

Every time I've been threatened by a macho-acting motorist while I'm riding, they've always been to scared to say something to my face. Many times after someone yelled, reved their engine at me, flipped me off, etc, etc, I chased them down at a stop light or stop sign and they were too scared to even look me in the eye. Its always the same scenario. I ask them what their problem is and they either ignore me or apologize. If they're a little more ballsy, they might keep talking trash, but always back down when I stand my ground and tell them to bring it on. So keep on running your mouths, we all know you're just a bunch of pansies who are too scared to get involved in a face to face confrontation. I'll keep biking ON THE ROAD, obeying all traffic laws. If you've got a problem with that, I dare you to get out of your car and say something to my face.
edit: For the record I ride Lake Wheeler rode often this time of year, but only on the weekends so as not to interfere with people's legitimate daily errands. But honestly, if you get pissed off at me because you're delayed 20 seconds on a scenic drive through farmland on a Saturday, you are an idiot. Honestly folks, I'm so sorry I made you a drive half the speed limit for half a minute while you were en route to your weekend yard sales.

^ I can't say that I've had anyone say anything to me on Lake Wheeler and only one car beep the horn. The motorists have generally been accomodating to me. Like you, I generally only ride Lake Wheeler in the early morning hours of the weekend so as to lessen the chances of being an inconvenience to motorists.
I have noticed on most of Lake Wheeler, Ten-Ten, Penny and Holly Springs roads that there is generally enough shoulder in most places to ride to the right of the white line which is what I do when it is available. I do agree with you 100% though on the need for following all traffic rules as I have seen far too many cyclists NOT following them when I'm driving. If they otherwise become pissed... oh well, their problem. I'm sure I'll be out there tomorrow morning. 7/7/2006 2:11:24 PM |

Let me state my position in a more clear and level-headed way, so you don't just pigeonhole me as a rage-filled lunatic.
The majority of bike riders do so for purely recreation exercise. It's a pasttime, much like swimming or softball. However, unlike these activities, bicycles create an enormously dangerous situation for both the riders and other traffic. Even the most careful of drivers risks a head-on collision every time they pass bikers. Sure, some portion of vehicular traffic may be recreational as well, but it's presence on the highway has a relatively insignificant impact on everyone's safety.
Our current traffic laws were written to accomodate all methods of travel, from the richest to the very poor. I go out of my way to ensure the safety of real bikers.(You know, the guys riding with groceries that aren't wearing $100 spandex on a $1000 aluminum bike.) Lord knows I've seen the time when a bike was the only way I had to get around, and it's a shitty way to be.
The bottom line is this. I don't take my weight bench out into the middle of busy commuter roads to exercise because that would endanger myself and others. To expect the same courtesy from bikers is not unreasonable, I think. To hide behind laws that weren't written for recreational bikers and retreat to an "us vs. them" mentality only ignores the dangers and promotes wider irresponsibility among the biking community. 7/30/2006 9:46:00 PM |

To be fair though, passing a biker in a no passing zone is just as illegal as a biker passing you in the right part of the lane and running stop signs. 7/30/2006 10:00:20 PM |

well since you rule the road than I apparently can't even leave my house to go biking, have you ever actually been on a sidewalk in Raleigh with a road bike? obviously not or you wouldn't have made that statement, walk down the sidewalk on Kent road and then tell me if you still think that's feasible.
I'm not making any more responses in this thread to trolls, if you have something related to the topic and constructive by all means please post. smcrawff and Pyro, if you want to continue arguing irrelevant and off topic points make a new thread and get out of this one.

Do you honestly think bikers like having cars zoom by them 10 over the speed limit passing in a no pass zone on roads that are not wide enough and breathing in exhaust?!? Of course not, group rides and most of the time individual riders try to take less traveled roads but to access these roads we have to take the more traveled main roads, especially when we live in a city. Bikers honestly dislike city roads, but guess what we live in Raleigh so have to make do with what we have. Also, the suggestion of biking on the side walk on a road bike is ridiculous! The fact that you're even suggesting shows that you don't know what you're talking about, I commute to work and school on a mtn. bike and take advantage of the sidewalks when available, however this is not an option on a road bike. Also it's more dangerous on the sidewalks because drivers aren't looking on the sidewalk when they are about to turn on or off a road. Better to be on the road where the drivers are already looking.

I ride and wholeheartedly agree that getting into a massive group and blocking traffic is not the proper way to raise awareness. This is just my opinion. But as just stated by some others, the big big majority of the group rides in the area (western and southwester Wake) during the week start out from Cary/Apex and head out to N. Apex into Chatham county and back. Even during the week, once we get out 'there', these roads are lightly traveled (it surprises me actually) and some roads down around the nuke plant and old us 1 are even more scarce.
Bigger (in the 100s) group rides take place on weekends and start early in the morning and also try to stay out of your way.
We don't like riding near you even more than you don't like us riding near you, because you win in collisions and you're also a lot less observant than we are when it comes to people on the roads. 7/31/2006 11:33:26 AM |

It's not my fault that your bike is not built well enough to handle 1/4" cracks. Mine came from Wal-mart and handles urban terrain beautifully. It was actually on sale, if I remember correctly. I can give you directions the nearest store, if you'd like. Just PM me. 7/31/2006 7:41:34 PM |

you are a dumbass
there are a few differences between your walmart shit can and some of our bikes
you clearly dont recognize the difference between well built bikes and the crap that walmart sells...those are not well built bikes
just because they hold up on shitty sidewalks does not mean a damn thing....they also weight twice as much as a real "road bike", dont have near the level of quality components (or any for that matter) and probably have a warranty shorter than the time it takes for you to beat off to internet midget porn7/31/2006 10:47:11 PM |

Raleigh used to be a really great place to ride.
That disappeared when the Arrivee/Kerr Drugs Tues/Thurs ride ended around 2000. A lot rides leave from Cary, but even they're up against the limits of sprawl.
I would suggest moving away. 8/1/2006 4:33:22 PM |

Yea, what I intended to say was it's really easy to get out of cary into the backroads north of apex, south of Durham and east of Jordan. Most rides go out into there, takes 10 minutes to get there (you gotta warm up right?) and then you can hammer all you want. 8/2/2006 12:22:27 PM |
