Activists worry over expanded AIDS testing

LOS ANGELES, July 5 (UPI) -- Concerns are mounting in the United States over federal guidelines that would propose routine HIV tests for people 13 to 64 years old.

The guidelines would urge doctors to offer the test to everyone with basic health care, regardless of risk factor.

The Centers for Disease Control says broader testing is needed because about 25 percent of the estimated 1 million Americans with HIV are unaware they are carrying it, The Los Angeles Times reported.

Civil liberties activists and a range of politicians are worried that the HIV tests would impinge on individual rights and attach a damaging stigma to thousands of patients, while failing to ensure that they will receive treatment, the newspaper said.

Opponents worry that busy clinics and harried doctors could take shortcuts, or fail to explain the virus, misleading or coercing vulnerable patients.

So, to summarize, AIDS activists would rather a person not know he is infected, not get treatment, and then go out and infect other people instead of him knowing he is infected, not getting treatment, but then perhaps not infecting other people.

Believe it or not, you can still get HIV from good ole fashion vaginal sex, you can even get it from oral sex. Sure it may not happen that often, but it does! ^that study was a survey on housewives, not how their husbands got infected. they made a statement you agree with, but the actual study had notthing to do with that premise. notice that the empidemic is with those men, who are having gay sex, or sex w/ prostitutes. the study is concerned with men giving their wives HIV, but there is nothing about the numbers.

it doesn't say how there partners were infected, but it does state that most of the cases were
heterosexual. you are correct that their particular study didn't directly address this issue, and i don't have access to the full article so i can't see what source they used. but considering that particular statement was made in a peer-reviewed journal i consider it credible.

no one is arguing that it is not harder to contract HIV via heteosexual sex, but your statement is somewhat of a misconception. while difficult to contract HIV in this manner, it still accounts for a large portion of the new cases worldwide. the idea that it is difficult for heterosexuals to get HIV likely leads to many of these cases.

below are two more articles that support the one above in that they state heterosexual sex is a major contributor to the HIV pandemic, particularly in Africa.
