Well, son, I did check. There are two variations of the last name Kohn - one being a derivative of the hebrew word for priest and one being a shortening of the name of Prussian emperor Konrad. I couldn't find a single source on the entire internet mentioning Donald Kohn's jewish heritage.

Jews were important in medieval banking because of the christian church's position on usury. So yes, many of the historic banks have some sort of jewish connection and European jews have roots in banking. That is the extent of it. because superficial things like pigmentation, style of dress, and geographic location are foundational to definitions of race.

I agree that race is meaningless, but "race" still holds meaning (social construct, you know). To say otherwise is an affront to those who have experienced discrimination based on their skin color...and let's not get started on the past.

I understand that many people don't consider Jews to be a "race," but according to a class I took three years ago, they still consitute a "race."

I'm not sure how it's relevant. I consider the thread title to be bullshit so I'm just talking.

I'm totally against racism. So it kinda weirds me out to know that there is a "race" of people out there, claiming relgious righteousness over others. That goes against what I know to be true.

Claim righteousness all you want but don't do it in the context of race.

That said, it's not clear that Jews considered themselves a race of people. Perhaps other folks have placed that label on them.
