I'd like to get into swimming for exercise, are there any pools in the Cary area? My gym doesnt have a pool so I've got to find one. It sucks that the Triangle Aquatic Center isnt going to be finished until next year, its about 2min from my house.

i dont really care if swimming is good or bad exercise, I want to use swimming to supplement the exercise work I am already doing which is weightlifting, running, biking, and ellipticalmachining

I just want some recommendations on pools. I know some people swim at pullen, thats far from me since I live in cary. There are other places, I just cant find them.

HA HA WTF IS THIS??

SERIOUSLY THOUGH WAKE COUNTY HAS SEVERAL PUBLIC INDOOR/OUTDOOR POOLS.....I ONLY KNOW OF THE ONES IN RALEIGH (OPTIMIST IN N. RALEIGH AND PULLEN PARK POOL BY CAMPUS)......THERE IS PROBABLY ONE IN CARY AND THE MEMBERSHIPS ARE REALLY CHEAP.....YOU JUST NEED TO FIND WHEN THEY HAVE OPEN SWIMS JUST TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN YOUR SCHEDULE.....

Not necessarily, depends on what your goals are.

I'd PM LiusClues He does triathalons and probably can give you some info.

I live in cary near harrison ave/chapel hill rd, does the Beyond Fitness on Maynard/Chapel Hill Rd have a pool?

One vote for the superiority of running... you can't find a place to swim. Never had that problem with running. Just kidding, its all personal preference. I ran 12 miles Saturday... something cool about covering that much ground with nothing more than a pair of sneakers.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=swim+club+near+walnut+st+cary,+nc&ie=UTF8&om=1

The two I was going to mention would be the Cary Swim Club off walnut (which I used to see all the time by my high school) and the Candler swim club. The Candler club isn't cheap, but it was a good pool and we went there all the time as kids.

That map might give you some ideas though, just plug in your street/intersection.

There is Impact Gym on Towerview Ct., which is from Maynard Rd. onto Jesse Jackson Ave. I don't know about their rates, but here's a website - impactathleticsnc.com I used to baby-sit a little girl that did dance and cheerleading there. The people that work there are amazing, and there are all types of different classes and free seminars every month. It's worth a look anyway.

thanks for the link Mindstorm and Picaflora, I found two places in cary that I want to check out. Sometimes its hard to get the wording right to search for what you want on google.

^ I've had enough run-ins with fire ants lately, so fuck that. I've still got about 20 bite marks on my feet and ankles from last week in Florida

Oh, here's a link I found with a bunch of private pools, http://www.triangleipages.com/m/membershipsportsrecclubs/swimmingpoolsprivate/default.htm

i dont think anyone is going to say that. if i remember from past threads on this topic, the only negative aspect (if you want to call it that) of swimming people brought up was that studies were done that show that swimming is not the optimum exercise for losing weight. running is better for that.

but theres no way in hell that swimming is shitty exercise....it just may not be the best choice for you depending on what your goals are.

Yeah, I don't see anyone saying that. The only negative aspect I can honestly think of is the incovenience of having to find a pool. Or if you only have access to an outdoor pool, you can't do it when its cold.

thats another thing I was considering, should I find a location with an indoor pool for year round access, or outdoor only for summer. I should be able to use an outdoor pool through September at least right?

most outdoor pools close in mid August, at least in my experience. Indoor would be best, to avoid sunburn and so you can continue in the fall.

I know that SAS has a really nice pool. It may be for employees only but I'm pretty sure they let other people join if they pay a fee.

How well do you know how to swim? If it's been a while, it's probably a good idea to get some lessons. With proper technique you will be able to swim much farther/faster. No matter what your ability, you will get excercise. But if you know what you're doing it will be more satisfying because you can see results much quicker.

I know how to swim enough to keep me afloat, but I've never had any official instruction on how to swim. That would be a must, Nerdchick didnt you swim back in the day? want to teach me?

My neighbor works for SAS, I'll ask her about getting into their pool up there, its right up Harrison Ave from me, not far at all.

I took up swimming a few summers back. It's a damn good exercise and it's really one you can do without much experience...of course, like ^^ said, lessons will get you results faster, but even simple doggie paddling is good for a beginner.

what I'd need to learn is the proper swim stroke (no homo) so I dont fuck up my arms/shoulders, and breathing. Last time I tried to swim laps I managed to get water all up in my eyes, nose, and my timing was all fucked up and I tried to suck up a bunch of pool water.

I'm not very coordinated, but I can follow instructions, and that counts for something right?

Is there a standard length for pools? I normally swim a life vest about 50 yards out and do laps between it and the pier for excercise.

The standard pool size is 25 meters. Olympic size, however, is 50 meters.

holy shit, so to swim a mile you would have to swim about 32 laps down and back on a 25m pool, that would take forever. Four sets of 8 might not be too bad

In swim practice, 20 laps was our warmup...we also had a 20 lap cool down.

You must master the flip turn...

I'm not sure what you mean by standard. Short course is 25 yards, CSC and Candler are both 25 yard pools. Pullen and Optimist alternate between swimming across the pool (25 yards) or the Olympic distance 50m.

I can't remember which pool it is in Chapel Hill, but they set the divider up in such a way that there are 2 50m lanes, then on one side of the divider it will be ~25 yards and on the other side ~25 meters. I've never seen Pullen or Optimist do that.

I have a friend who did swimming in high school... she was doing backstroke at some competition and the people who set up the event fucked up with the flags. She went to do the flip turn thing and ended up breaking her nose.

There is not a "standard" for a short course pool.... There are pools that are in meters and others that are in yards... US swimming keeps records for both. If you are ever interested in international or national level competition, those competitions are almost always held in 50 meter pools. Also, a mile is 1500 meters or 1650 yards. Therefore, in a 50 meter pool you will swim 30 laps, in a 25 meter pool you will swim 60 laps, and in a 25 yeard pool you will swim 66 laps. If you need any help with your strokes, I will be more than happy to work with you any time! (A lap is considered one length of the pool)

I am about to take Swim Conditioning and know Im going to get my arse kicked the first few weeks. I swam competitively in my middle school years but mostly just lift weights and run for baseball...im hoping to drop a few but building up stamina and leg strength should be good for the offseason. My friend and I ,(both in the class) will be doing 1 mile/day M, W, F if anyone wants to join.

NCStategal...how good are you, we dont want to be shown up too bad
