http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/07/11/congress.guantanamo.ap/index.html
Quote : | "The Bush administration said Tuesday that all detainees held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and in all other U.S. military custody around the world are entitled to protections under the Geneva Conventions.
White House spokesman Tony Snow said the policy, outlined in a new Defense Department memo, reflects the recent 5-3 Supreme Court decision blocking military tribunals set up by President Bush." |
After all those conservatives defending the Fascists policies, and now Bush and Co. finally come clean. Or, is this part of a deeper ploy that has yet to reveal itself?7/11/2006 12:25:47 PM |

To be fair he has been saying for awhile that he was waiting for the supreme court decision.
I'd say North Korea is a bigger recent flip-flop. 7/11/2006 12:27:50 PM |

The flip-floping part was mostly a joke, people are allowed to change their opinions if they have good reason. 7/11/2006 12:32:33 PM |

Well, I guess the courts decided they deserve those rights. Now I will support them receiving them. 7/11/2006 12:35:21 PM |

I doubt this will change anything significantly 7/11/2006 12:36:53 PM |

^^ Why did you have to wait for the courts? Shouldn't basic decency and logic lead you to believe that there was something wrong about what was being done with the Guantanamo prisoners? 7/11/2006 12:39:49 PM |

No, if that were the case, the Geneva rules wouldn't have had to be invented.
Besides, I don't support any physical torture, but I think that enemy combatants can be sleep-deprived and held longer without trial than your average citizen. That way you can get information from them to help you fight the war. 7/11/2006 12:44:26 PM |

That doesn't make sense. That's like saying we don't need laws against murder, because people know not to murder.
Also, personally, I can handle a little torture, if they know who they are torturing, but in the cause of Guantanamo, they didn't know who was really guilty, and who wasn't, and they weren't even doing any investigating to find out, as well as not charging people or holding trials, only holding secret trials when they did, and a policy of detaining them indefinitely. That is the worst part of the while thing, IMO.7/11/2006 12:48:24 PM |

If you're going to say it at least say it right.... He "pulled a Kerry". Flip flop is no longer a term.... Kerry officially renamed it two years ago.... 7/11/2006 1:25:42 PM |

I might be amenable to saying that the detainees deserve their rights just as human beings, but I've yet to see one good reason why they deserve them because of the Geneva Convention. 7/11/2006 2:43:08 PM |

Well it's either military courts under the Geneva Convention or civilian court.
You can't wave a wand and create a magical third option in which the prisoner gets the worst of both worlds (so says the SC) 7/11/2006 3:20:34 PM |

Sure you can. And you can change your mind about it later when it's politically expedient to do so. 7/11/2006 7:11:47 PM |
