or
I was cleaning around a job site on Friday and came up with a whole handful of colorful snake and a pair of pants full of, eh, nevermind.
Anyway, both are native to our area. I've read that few hospitals carry the antivenom though.

The second one is a poisonous coral snake. It's suprisingly difficult to tell the difference when the sonambitch is wrapped around your hand. 7/16/2006 1:13:16 AM |

Was this in NC? If so, it almost certainly wasn't coral snake.
Btw, that pic is of some crazy Latin American coral snake.
Our coral snakes look more like this:

Yeah, we get coral snakes down here, too. I know there's the little "Red on Yellow kills a fellow" rhyme, but if I see something with red, yellow and blue bands, I'm not sticking around long enough to play the little rhyme. Their venom is actually quite potent and IIRC, they "chew" when they bite into you. 7/16/2006 10:57:45 AM |

^^Yea, that was my opinion on the matter. I'm pretty sure it was a king though. Anyway, it got away from me and ran into the crawlspace of the house. I'm glad I don't have to crawl under there.7/16/2006 1:39:57 PM |

haha . . . i know a guy who is in hte HVAC business and has been crawling under other people's houses for years. he says the only time he ever came across a snake was when he was under his own houses. and apparently it was a pretty good sized snake too. 7/16/2006 2:13:38 PM |

i'm pretty sure that there technically aren't any poisonous snakes in NC. The ones you listed are all Venomous.
If something is poisonous, the poison is spread throughout and you get the poision from coming in contact with it or from ingesting it. Something that is Venomous injects the venom into the thing.

Quote : | "Of the 37 species of snakes throughout North Carolina, only six are venomous:
1. Copperhead (found throughout NC) 2. Canebrake Rattlesnake (found throughout NC) 3. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (found in southeastern NC) 4. Pigmy Rattlesnake (found in southeastern NC) 5. Cottonmouth or Water Moccasin (found in wetland areas in the eastern half of NC) 6. Coral Snake (the rarest, found in the south and southeastern areas of NC)" |

With my job I get to remove copperheads from yards and crawl spaces. Monday was my first day and I almost put my hand on the copperhead we removed because I somehow didn't spot it with my flashlight before moving forward.
But yes, copperhead is the only one in the Triangle. If you want to see cottonmouth and rattlesnakes, go toward Fort Bragg. Had an internship out there one summer and constantly had to find detours around the cottonmouths.
