A small example is that the sunnis have always killed christians in Lebanon. Shiites have rarely ever done such things to them. But in the end, muslim will help muslim against anything else. 7/16/2006 3:10:14 AM |

in general, the world population of muslims is about 90% Sunni / 10% Shia. so by that measure alone, you might say that Shia are more "looked down upon"
but unlike the general muslim world, populations of Iran and Iraq are majority Shia.
Saddam was nominally a Sunni, and his party (Baathist) were Sunni. He was really, of course, secular. The clerics had little to no influence on government. Women were free to move about, didnt have to cover their heads, could vote, work in professions, teach at universities... you know the story.
Saddam would use religiosity in a pinch to shore up his support. For instance, he would dress in traditional Shia clothing for propaganda in the heavily Shiite areas of the country.
Both versions can be fucking lunatics, and the extremists probably hate each other more than they hate the West.
notable differences between the two is that Shia have additional rules that they have to follow. Texts that were written by Muhammed's successors, as sort of explanatory material to the Qu'ran, have almost as much authority as the Qu'ran itself, for the Shia. Sunnis think that these extra regulations and proscriptions are bullshit.
i get the feeling that many Sunni's have the perception that Shias are more conservative and fundamentalist, and less educated.
but don't come away from this thinking Sunnis are like enlightened and liberal or anything. Just check out Saudi Arabia. one of the most conservative and oppressive muslim countries, and they are largely Sunni.
so who knows really. i think any fundamentalist of any religion is nuts.7/18/2006 2:16:43 AM |

Saudi Arabia has one of the strictest interpretations of Sharia Law of any muslim nation in the world. Afghanistan, under the Taliban, was probably the only country more strict in its interpretation and enforcement of Sharia Law.
Saudi Arabia is essentially a police state, run by the theocratic Sunni clerics, under authority of the King. for instance, there is no religious tolerance. everyone must adhere to a specific school of Sunni Islam. any muslim who converts to another religion is punished by death if he doesnt recant.
THey are the "good guys", because the royal family is pro-western for their own personal gain. as far as the population goes, fuck em, let the Imams and the religious police force deal with them.
go work in Saudi Arabia. they will pay you $Texas, but youll stay isolated in a "western" compound. your wife will not be allowed to leave unless she wears a full veil, and full coverage dresses.. she wont be allowed to drive anywhere. there will be many places you will not be allowed to travel. you will not be allowed to view any of the daily public executions, for instance.

alot of times, the "extreme" muslims are the ones with a criminal past, uneducated and going nowhere in life.

ok, you've got a point there. before, they could vote for or against the baathists. if they agitated for the wrong party, they could wind up in prison. now they can vote for Sunni fundamentalists or Shia fundamentalists. if they agitate for the wrong party, they can wind up dead.
Quote : | "[women would be] raped and disfigured by saddam's sons" |
yeah, you've got another point: that was reported to have happened on a few occasions. but somehow, i find that to be preferable to being raped and murdered along with your entire family by U.S. Servicemen.
anyhow, at least now Iraqi women are "free" to wear full head coverings when they go outside, and only go outside accompanied by male relatives, under the threat of being beat or raped by roving islamic paramilitaries attempting to institute Sharia Law in Iraq. now they are also free to be the subject of accusations of infidelity by any male villager, and free to be executed by a summary tribal Sharia court.

i agree with your sentiment.
unfortunately, we've got a US president who has an under-developed sense of morality, who can only understand concrete concepts, can only view things in terms of black and white.
instead of seeing terrorist activities as the crimes that they are, and pursuing terrorists as criminals, he's led on a leash by fundamentalists christians who want to instigate a worldwide conflagration of judeo-christians countries versus the muslims.
then they can open their bibles to the last book of the new testament, say "hey, look, it's the Armageddeon, Jesus is on his way!".
have you ever wondered why the US christian religious right (and this administration) are so completely behind Israel to expand it's borders?
it is because US evangelical christans are overwhelmingly "premillenial dispensationalists" in their theology. this theology requires a belief that Israel must be restored to Old Testament boundaries before Christ returns.
there are many references on this subject, here's a good summary:

^^you could also argue the same thing for the way Islamic states are run by hardline fundamentalists...ie Iran.
The United States is not basing all of this completely off of influence from evangelists. There are economic/political reasons why we back Israel. Oil is the only thing that we want/need from the Middle East. If another region in the world had all of the oil that the MidEast has and with access, we wouldn't give a flying shit about the entire middle east.

well that explains .... absolutely fucking nothing.
if OIL is the only thing we want/need from the middle east, then why do we piss off the OIL PRODUCING nations of the middle east in our unwavering support of the NON-oil producing nation of Israel in their political/military/social/economic actions that negatively affect the OIL PRODUCING nations, and prejudice the OIL PRODUCERS against us??

Yes, and none of them exist, anymore. They went away with the soviet union. The only reason we back israel is because post cold war politicians ignored the wisdom of avoiding entangling alliances. Israel does whatever the fuck it wants, regardless of how it fits in with US goals, and we get blamed for it.
