so i got this loaner laptop from the bookstore and i want to create a new partition on the hard drive to install windows vista, could someone explain how this is done?

Get ParitionMagic 8.0 (or whatever version it is now) and go from there. I've used that to resize partitions and it works great.

When you install vista it comes dual boot by default and works fine. I actually wasn't able to use partitionmagic because of errors on my drive so i just made new partitions when i reformated. When you start your computer it asks you if you want to boot in Windows (Vista) or an older version. So far the only problem I have had is that there are no good 5.1 drivers for Vista.

i tried just straight installing vista and it tried to overwrite XP, so i was like stop, how do i get around this, also since this is a loaner from the bookstore they dont somehow have the ability to install a new operating system blocked or something do they?

I think if you overwrite it you can still boot into the old version but I'm not sure. The first time I installed it I just installed it over XP and I know the boot screen came up I just never tried going into the old version.

so i think i am just gonna instal vista tommorow and try it out, worst that can happen is i have to take the laptop back to the bookstore and say put XP back on it for me. anyone had any significant problems with vista?

1) Create a new partition on your Hard Drive using GParted LiveCD (free). Format it to NTFS.
2) Name your partition "XP" and your newly created Vista Partition "VISTA" through Disk Management.
3) Reboot, install VISTA to the "VISTA" partition. Done.

I haven't actually tried this, but it should work in theory. If vista doesn't give you an option to install to a different partition/drive, report back to us.

^because i wanna fuck around with vista before i turn it back in to the bookstore, i dont wanna do it on my personal laptop because A. it doesn't have enough hard drive space(too much porn i figure) and B. if it fucks up it dont matter i wont lose any information or anything

and i can choose which partition to install it on, i just have to create one first

If you do it right, you don't have to worry about losing any info. I've installed plenty of OSes on my primary drive where all my shit is.

and like i said before i dont have neough space on my personal laptop to instal it, that and its still at the ibm shop getting repaired
