we went to the festival last year - the parade is great and really the only reason to go - i posted pictures in this thread somewhere - unfortunately we'll be leaving the parade early to make our soccer game

i highly recommend taking marta and not driving

i went out there today, mainly just to hear the bands. it was fun, but would have been better if i didn't have to go by myself.

edit: people on the marta were freaking out about how inconvenient it is. ha ha ha.

How 'bout them Hawks, Atlanta???? Hope there's no game 7 against the Heat, but if so I'm definitely going. Went to game 2 and had a good time despite the loss.

i can not think of a worse atmosphere...a NBA game in a city where people don't give a shit about pro sports

yes i know people show up for the playoffs, but that only makes it slightly better than the crowd at a lakers game where people go to just be seen

went to Johnny's Hideaway for the first time Thursday, it was their 30th anniversary party.

holy shit I was stunned. I didnt know places like that really existed.

first off, the place HAS to be mob owned. I felt like I was in Goodfellas, every guy that worked there was Italian, nice suits, slicked back hair, pictures of Sinatra all over the walls, red leather everywhere, looked like a time machine to 1984 New Jersey.

I was the youngest person there by 5 years at least.

Hungry divorced 40+ women everywhere, a fair amount of which were really hot for old women.

Hungry divorced 50+ men everywhere who were all over the women, felt like a middle aged Senor Frogs or something.

They pour their drinks REALLY strong.

Really cool bartender there, Harold, he is worth going for by himself.

I think I met a madame there, Miss Vicky. She was probably late 40s, early 50s, had about 10 younger asian women with her, drinking Dom Perignon, I asked her what she did for a living and she said "whatever I feel like".

One of the more bizarre nights I have had recently, but oddly enough, a lot of fun. Everyone that worked there was really really nice and great service.

^^^^ you're just a hater! i mean, let's be realistic here - the hawks have been terrible for the past decade, tough to get people super excited about 41 regular-season home games when the city is so used to a loser. they averaged over 16,000 fans per home game this season (their first winning season in years), which isn't terrible by any stretch. the only cities where you see a real thriving fan base regardless of a team's performance is in cities where the team has a storied tradition and/or is the only game in town (i.e. portland, utah, boston, detroit, LA, etc). they've already sold more season tickets for next year than they had this season, so as the team is coming around so to is the city.

yeah, i will admit I'm a hater of the Hawks. the few actual hawks fans/season ticket holders I know here spent the last 2 weeks talking more about the celtics losing games to the bulls than the hawks winning games against the heat. I really don't care for the NBA either way, but to listen to them bitch and moan about the celtics was too fucking annoying

oh, and

is it only valid for the 5 bars listed at the bottom of the website - what is the discount?

i assume the idea is that at 6pm nobody is going home to go to bed so they're going to make a decent amount of money off of this

Funny that Limerick Junction is considered historical given it was opened in the late 80's.

I'll be on Jekyll Island for a wedding that weekend, but the walk sound like a typical weekend anyway...except for Manuel's which is too far away from everything else and kind of sucky

^^^ none of these places are very crowded in the afternoon, so seating should only be a problem if there are tons of folks on the bar crawl itself. i like all those bars other than limerick junction, may get some folks from the 'hood to join in

^^ I was wondering about Limerick... they claim that its the oldest one... not sure how exactly... changed names? location?

I like Manuel's but I dont get to the Highlands too much except for Metalsome

I have a wedding to go to on Jekyll Island this weekend. Really appreciate them having it on an expensive ass resort island on Memorial Day weekend. and I'm going solo as the girl I'm seeing is competing in the US Nationals for the Modern Pentathlon next weekend in CA (top 3 make Team USA) and a weekend of partying isn't in her cards

which leads to a funny story...the first night we went out, we had dinner before going to a concert. at dinner I talked about living in london and she mentioned she wanted to go to London in 2012. I said that would be awesome thinking it would be sweet to go back to london and watch the olympics. After the concert she talked about her training and it dawned on my that when she said she wanted to go to london in 2012, she didn't mean to watch them...she meant to compete in them. it was a big "oooohhhhh, that's what she meant" moment

I'm pretty sure that Atkins Park in the highlands is the oldest continually operating tavern in Atlanta (opened in 1922 as a deli licensed as a tavern or something like that)

virginia highland summerfest is this coming weekend - should be a good time, and the weather is gonna MUCH better this year (was 100+ degrees last year, looking to be in the low 80's this saturday). anyhow, my neighbor (and fellow state alum) are co-hosting a little block party at our buildings saturday afternoon/evening, near the intersection of n. highland and virginia. if any of y'all are out at the summerfest and want to stop by, just pm me for the details. word up!

went to andretti racing indoor go karts up in roswell last night. pretty fun, but expensive. $22/8min race. i wouldn't have minded the price if all the cars were somewhat equally fast, but apparently maintenance consists of topping off the fuel and sweeping the floor.

anyone seen any rain lately??? good gracious, been pouring in the highlands for the past 4 hours. Virginia ave has been impassable, water level above cars' headlights. at least the rain has given me a free car wash though.
