My car is making a squealing sound that seems to be coming from the wheels/tires whatever. The sound is mid- to high-pitched and only occurs when the brake pedal is NOT pushed. What's goin on, folks?

my 91 jetta does that. i'm pretty sure in my case it's just an anti rattle clip that i bent a little bit when putting the brakes back together. it did not do it before i had the front end apart.

in your case it *could* be that you need new pads.

edit:
mine is a squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak and the frequency of the squeaking changes with speed.

most places will check the brakes for you, or you could just look at the pads (you may need to take the wheel off) and see how much friction material is left.
