I've been on quite a few guided cave tours, but we're about ready to do some exploring ourselves. Where are some good places to go that dont take 10 hrs to get to. Also, and resources are welcome, i'm having trouble finding maps or info on anywhere close to here. Suggestions please!! 7/18/2006 5:06:58 PM |

thanks for all the awesome help... *Sarcasm*
By saying 10 hours to get to, I mean I'm not interested in going to anywhere in Alabama or Kentucky. I am interested in the places in Tennessee, hence why I said places that dont take 10 hrs to get to.
BTW- Just because I might not want to pay a damn guide a bunch of $ to show me how to do something I already understand does not mean I am an irresponsible recreationer thankyou. The only thing ive ever taken away from a cave were some awesome memories and pictures. quit being a bitch.
I'm asking what places are up in the mtns for caving around NC, TN and SC? The 10 hr rule was b/c I dont want anything past TN. Apologies if that was confusing. 7/18/2006 7:57:48 PM |

good idea for a thread
i've been in a few caves in VA, but most were on private property

caving and spelunking are the same pretty much. Sometimes people call caving spelunking when you need climbing ropes and harnesses for rapelling and such. I'm more into just general horizontal cave exploring.. less to carry
ZiP do you remember the name of the cave you were in? The last one I visited was actually on private property (as are a lot of them), but I can't remember the name. 7/18/2006 8:09:18 PM |

i'm actually a big fan of spelunking, i'd love to go sometime in pennsylvania or upstate NY.
i don't recall there being a formal name posted anywhere on the last one I was in. it was around the northwest Virginia area (ie: Bridgewater, Harrisonburg, Dayton...), sorry.
I do miss the outdoors though

well if we plan a trip (currently 4 going) and you're not a total weirdo, you're more than welcome to come.
I'd like to start my friends out who havent been (two of them) at Robert's Cave in Virginia. Smaller, cant get lost, but a good bit of fun.
I'd love to travel farther and see some of the larger caves, just trying to find some long weekend trips right now.
I'm looking into the asheville area right now.. thanks everyone 7/18/2006 9:17:09 PM |

Well i'm still researching some stuff.. but yeah I work like a slave right now so no trips this month. probably something in september. When we do i'll make a post to see who might want to tag along.
Why is Bat Cave at chimney rock coming up? but I cant find any actual info about the cave... is that just a place, and not an actual cave? (which would be stupid.. but anyway). Has anyone been there? 7/19/2006 4:00:15 PM |

I don't have any resources for you, but here are some pictures from a cave that I went into on private property in Southwest Virginia:

if you want to make the drive up to Cullowhee (western carolina university), i spent part of my summer up there as a whitewater rafting guide/trainer, and we went caving some - i don't remember where it was, but if you stop on the WCU campus and find the UC building theres a place called Base Camp Cullowhee that does expeditions and stuff - they should be able to help you out. it was pretty awesome. 7/23/2006 2:19:04 PM |

Ask some of the females on TWW. Most of them are cavebitches who might know a thing or two.
Actually no, most of them are fucking morons. 7/23/2006 3:54:25 PM |

One summer in high school, I did summer ventures at wcu. We went caving and I had a great time. I'd never been before. I don't remember where the cave was but I think it was privately owned and it seemed to take forever to get there from campus. Once we were in the cave it seemed like we went in forever and there were some tight places, including many yards when you were on your belly, crawling through water. You entered the cave through the ground and on the rock above the entrace was spray painted "Welcome to Hell" or something like that.
If anyone knows where I'm talking about, let me know! I'd love to go again sometime.7/24/2006 2:04:11 PM |
