LONG AND SHORT: how do you know when a harddrive is shot?

i put it into an external drive thingy to plug into my new computer... the disk doesnt turn.

i put it back into my old PC and it wont start up... fan turns on for a sec then nothing

HELP! does that mean the harddrive is defunct and i lost everything????????

You usually get a SMART error saying the drive is due for imminent failure. Sounds like the motor died on yours though if nothing is spinning up.

That's odd. Hooking it up in the computer via IDE causes the computer to not even turn on properly? You said the fan turns on for a sec then stops, right? You mean the Power Supply fan or the CPU fan or what? Not sure what could cause that. It's possible there's something you're overlooking but it's impossible to tell from here. I'll take a look at it if you can bring it by.
