I'm using a DOS based accounting program. useing the net use command I was able to share the USB printer on the LPT port. When I use the program to print reports it seems that the documents are spooled to the printer but nothing ever prints. In the windows print quere I see the jobs, then it says printed but the printer never moves.

In my dos program there is a printer config menu. In the menu there are some numerical codes. I'm not sure what that is about.

I can't remember what type of printer it is. Is this a receipt printer or a standard desk printer? If it is a standard desk printer try using the HP LaserJet III drivers. A lot of older applications will work with a printer using these drivers.

From the sound of it the program seems to be passing the print jobs on to the printer. You may want to try to change the printer settings that deal with the spooling. Instead of having it spool the jobs try to have it print directly to the printer.

I hate trying to deal with these type of legacy programs but it seems like there is always one floating around somewhere. I have a client that has a dos based accounting/pos system that is shared out on a terminal server that prints via networked serial receipt printers. That thing is a nightmare.

Unfortunately I feel your pain. Ive dealt with this issue way too many times before.

Set the printer to print directly to the printer (turn off spooling) and set the data format to RAW, 99.9% of the time that fixes the issues.

Go to the printer properties via control panel->printers & faxes, right click and properties.

Then go to advanced, change the spooling to print directly to the printer, check to enable advanced printing features, then click on Print Processor and make sure its set to default to RAW (just RAW, none of the other RAW options)

that should get you up and running
