Nicely Done everybody,
http://www7.acs.ncsu.edu/ncsubookstores/computers.html
but it still doesn't tell you shit about the student discount. Nor does it tell you the price when you custom order a machine. 7/24/2006 2:15:22 PM |

Virginia Tech lists an 8% discount for Dell computers. I'll assume similar for NC State.
If you are trying to save money (more than time), educate yourself and wait till Black Friday / check slickdeals.net often. The bookstore won't get you a heck of a lot of a discount. 7/24/2006 6:43:22 PM |

Please don't talk out of your ass.
If you're talking about Dell or Apple, maybe. The apple discount usually ends up being around 10% and the dell discount is around 12%. The dell discount can be combined with promotional coupons though, so it can be fairly significant. The discount on thinkpads however is fairly large. Compare the model numbers provided for the thinkpads to prices off of slickdeals. Discounts compared to major retailers are generally 20-30% and is almost always the absolute lowest price. Only IBM/Lenovo employees can get some of those systems cheaper, and they can't always even get the /p high end models. The pricing advantage the bookstore has does diminish during the year as the model goes out of date, but by then the bookstore usually does it's demo sale.
Then you can look at accessories and software. ThinkPad items like batteries, docks, etc. are only marked 5% over the education wholesale cost. IBM employees can't even get docks as cheap as the bookstore sells them. As far as software goes, try loading office on your dell through dell.com and you're going to get ripped off. The discounts are pretty huge as far as thinkpads go. Sure DELL doesn't really offer students shit by comparison, but that's DELL for you.

Blindness or mental handicap should discourage you from making your own computer purchase. Seek help from a 3rd party specializing in the aid that disabled persons such as yourself require.

Dude, ease up, I was talking relative to the context I was speaking in. 10-12% is nothing compared to 50% or more you can save if you are patient. That's awesome though that it can be combined with promotional coupons. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I look to make a purchase.8/25/2006 10:30:46 AM |

Have you tried just simply searching the internet for the computer models the bookstore sells and comparing those prices with the bookstore's price?
I copy and paste the 'ThinkPad T60 2007-93U' into Google. In <1 minute, I see that this model sells online anywhere from $2900 to $3600. Heck, #9 link on google is the Univ of Saskatchewan's bookstore and that model sells there for $3569. assuming that's in canadian dollars, that is still $3200 USD.
The NCSU bookstore sells it for $2100. The average price elsewhere is say $3000, so $2100/$3000 = 70%, so you can roughly estimate the NCSU bookstore's student discount of Thinkpads to be 25% to 30%.
Now of course tax, shipping, warranty type things complicates this, but this is the reasoning i went through when getting my thinkpad.
And to think -- all of the above can be done in less than 5 minutes with just Google and some sense. 8/25/2006 11:56:53 AM |
