well...so specter wants to do, anyway

Quote : | "WASHINGTON - A powerful Republican committee chairman who has led the fight against President Bush’s signing statements said Monday he would have a bill ready by the end of the week allowing Congress to sue him in federal court.
“We will submit legislation to the United States Senate which will...authorize the Congress to undertake judicial review of those signing statements with the view to having the president’s acts declared unconstitutional,” Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa., said on the Senate floor.
Specter’s announcement came the same day that an American Bar Association task force concluded that by attaching conditions to legislation, the president has sidestepped his constitutional duty to either sign a bill, veto it, or take no action." |

Hey, cool. Bush will use his veto twice in a month after 5.5 years of no use, lol
Although, they'll simply override it, it'll be funny to see. 7/25/2006 12:08:01 PM |

who needs to veto when you can sign a statement that says you don't have to follow the law 7/25/2006 12:36:07 PM |

I do want to know why this is a big deal now, when he's apparantly done it for years. Elections...nearing...tactics...changing. 7/25/2006 12:38:57 PM |

Is congress the only entity that could sue him over this?
It seems like someone needs to challenge this. 7/25/2006 12:56:47 PM |

Boonedocks, I most likely agree, but where the hell did this shit come from? Why haven't I heard anything about this before. I watch CNN, they should have told me to be outraged years ago. 7/25/2006 1:39:42 PM |

For the record, this has been mentioned in the news. For years. Repeatedly. Not that it really matters now, but that should be clarified.
Why it has finally moved from the newspaper and into the legislature is readily apparent: We're less than four months from November and the Bush administration remains an albatross to the Republican party. This is a pre-fabricated election shelter for the moderates within the GOP who are frustrated by Bush's NSA/TIA grandiosity and other domestic issues to separate themselves from his administration.
The farthest this will get is to the veto stage, though.
If they couldn't get enough votes for a Congressional override for as widely supported a piece of legislation as the stem cell bill, they certainly won't be able to get enough votes to do so for such a politically motivated and contentious piece of legislation either. 7/25/2006 8:29:43 PM |

Gamecat, I guess I just don't read enough newspaper.
Thanks for calling me out. Back to my cave! 7/25/2006 8:48:12 PM |

i think it came to everyones attention because Bush finally actually vetoed something for real. then the reminders came that he had technically used stealth veto 800 times in the past 6 years, and the media finally jumped on it because its a hot issue now.
but you know, its gotta be clinton's fault. Janet Reno told Clinton that he could do it if he thought part of a law might be unconstitutional. he never used it, but...
it's still Clinton's fault.
and Kerry would have sucked worse.

What do the past presidents have to say about it? Even if they didn't use it (at all or much) do they support the use of it? 7/26/2006 8:42:29 AM |
