Hell, help me remember the movie at all

dad is a vietnam vet, and thats a big part of the movie. one thing that sticks in my mind is the son waking up dad and either getting backhanded, or dad pulling a gun for that.
the climax is his son in/around the town water tower, with other neighborhood boys in close proximity.

set in the south.
