I would have to say WHIP (walks + hits per inning pitched). Nothing tells you more about a pitcher than that.

By most meaningful to a player, then yes championships are definately a good measure.
But they tell you nothing about the value or ability of the player. Brad Johnson and Kurt Warner have more championships than Dan Marino, and Robert Horry has way more than Allen Iverson or Kevin Garnett.
On Base Percentage in baseball, goalie saves in hockey, QB rating in football, and double-doubles in basketball. 8/1/2006 12:55:05 AM |

Saves can be misleading. Roberto Luongo is the best goalie in the NHL, but he also has a tendency to leave rebounds instead of dealing with them and he's played behind terrible defense for his entire career, so his save total is artificially inflated. Save percentage is where it's at. 8/1/2006 1:13:47 AM |

I think for a statistic to be considered more meaningful, it has to be normalized. Such as WHIP, Save %, FG %, 3PT%, Fielding % for example. 8/1/2006 8:37:18 AM |
