He was a 4 star until he verbaled with us a while back and then he drop to 3...he then decommitted and went to UVA only to get out of it there and enroll here so he probably dropped another star for choosing us twice.

His best friends were the teens killed in the car crash off the 64 bypass ramp (went over the edge). They were coming back form seeing him in a playoff game when it happened. The emotional stress of 3 (or was it 4) of his close friends dying in his last semester caused him to not finish a class or two and UVa would not admit him despite his plan to make things right by the summer. Gavin had the second highest SAT score of any UVa commit and a good GPA so its not like he was simply a dumbass or anything. Amato had stayed in touch and Gavin Smith appreciated the show of concern and such so he looked into coming back to NCSU rather than trying to go through with it at UVa or anywhere else.
