I am tempted to try out HostGator for the MBA Student Association. We currently host at GoDaddy and no points for guessing that it has been a sucky experience.

Any experiences with HostGator ?

sorry that this doesn't have to do with hostgator, but why don't you go through ncsu hosting?

I've heard NCSU charges about 100 bucks a month for each database and they "recommend" only one application per database. I think my Director of Comms would feel safer if I wasn't running crazy PHP scripts on the server that hosts the College of Management website.

Also shared hosting gives you access to all those quick setup scripts etc, CRON jobs etc etc

I'm planning to build a business networking tool (similar to Orkut and My Space) for the MBA students and I expect this to bump up the load on the server.

^^^ yea NCSU hosting is fucking terrible. They really need to get their act together, it's retarded that nearly every student org and more than half the DEPARTMENTS in the school are hosted off-site.

I use them for my site. I'd say I notice down time 1/month. Recently, the HDD on the server I was on crashed and the back up HDD didn't work, so I lost about 1 weeks worth of data. They restored the site from an archive I guess.

I'd say their tech support is pretty good for the few times I have contacted them by email. I would often get a response with in 1-2hrs. They have tech by chat as well, and that was decent. For me since I'm not too tech savy, they have various modules you can install with only a click or two. That's how I got Wordpress and Gallery 2 up and running. Overall, they are the best I have had so far, but prior was Hassell and Progress Systems, so it would be hard to get much worse than that.
