Actually, 50,000,000.
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=india+infanticide
From the first link:
Quote : | "According to a recent report by the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) up to 50 million girls and women are missing from India' s population as a result of systematic gender discrimination in India. In most countries in the world, there are approximately 105 female births for every 100 males.
In India, there are less than 93 women for every 100 men in the population. The accepted reason for such a disparity is the practice of female infanticide in India, prompted by the existence of a dowry system which requires the family to pay out a great deal of money when a female child is married. For a poor family, the birth of a girl child can signal the beginning of financial ruin and extreme hardship.
However this anti-female bias is by no means limited to poor families. Much of the discrimination is to do with cultural beliefs and social norms. These norms themselves must be challenged if this practice is to stop.
Diagnostic teams with ultrasound scanners which detect the sex of a child advertise with catchlines such as spend 600 rupees now and save 50,000 rupees later.
The implication is that by avoiding a girl, a family will avoid paying a large dowry on the marriage of her daughter. According to UNICEF, the problem is getting worse as scientific methods of detecting the sex of a baby and of performing abortions are improving.
These methods are becoming increasing available in rural areas of India, fuelling fears that the trend towards the abortion of female foetuses is on the increase" |

it may not be that bad a thing actually as it will seriously curb population growth in india (china is going to experience the same thing) as there aren't enough women to keep the population growth at the previous rate. It's nice to think about hving a son so he can marry a girl down the road, until you realize there are no girls for him to marry. 8/3/2006 12:08:43 AM |

To the credit of the Indian Gov, they have banned ultrasounds for pregnant women, unless there is a medical reason (genetic diseases, etc), and just the other day, there was a report in the paper about a doctor being jailed for providing ultrasounds to pregnant women.
BUT, it is a big country with lots of people, and corruption and bribery are widespread. How many people are you gonna check? And even when you do, 100 rupees passed to the gov official could do wonders for you. 8/3/2006 12:29:06 AM |

What are you guys upset about? This is a great practice. Unwanted children are aborted before they have the chance to ruin the lives of the parents.

EXACTLY!
However everyone still does it. When I was there, a woman went to the police because her fiance's family demanded a dowry and she wouldn't pay it. It was SO rare and spectacular that it was the talk of the entire province. The family who refused to pay the dowry had to move away because they called out the offending family publicly and there was some serious bad blood then.8/3/2006 9:27:06 AM |

I Had to chime in.
Dowry is something that happens probably in the lower poorer classes. Even then, I doubt you understand what dowry really means. In any case, none of the people I know/aware of have had to deal with it. Maybe I live in a bubble.
Now, about the quote

Something that's illegal and carries so much social stigma with it couldn't be that "common". Someone pointed out how easy it is to pay Rs. 100/- and get a sonogram.
I would love to give you $100 and watch you get it done.

America has different values if you've ever noticed. Most of the world the men dominate the job market, and the cooking and cleaning are left to other suitable patrons physically and mentally unstable to suite the complex tasks. So, all the fathers want females excommunicated from the family practice, and a boy to continue the family name, it's not that hard to grasp
My soc teacher once told me men and woman are the same thing, both just looked at differently by society, I asked him if he's married 8/3/2006 11:38:08 AM |
