I want to enroll in a couple of courses, but can someone first tell me if the videotaped lectures which are put online, can they be downloaded, or are they streaming videos? If they can be downloaded to one's computer, how many MB are they?
Thanks. 8/3/2006 9:09:10 PM |

They send you out CDs by snail mail. 8/3/2006 9:13:58 PM |

^They do for some courses, but for some they'll only do that as a last resort. That's how CSC316 is...I'm taking it this summer.
The lectures are usually about 200 MB, for a 60 minute or so lecture.

for the two online classes that i had (I was here), you can stream the lecture

From what I was told...they ship to anywhere in the world. Some people were taking CSC579 from Greece.
Even then, like someone else mentioned, you can download the rm file 8/4/2006 12:11:35 AM |

^ But then would they still expect such students to follow the same deadlines? I mean if they are gonna mail CDs, it is gonna take 10-15 days for me to get them.
Also, I am not getting clear info. Someone implied you can download the lectures, and someone said he streamed them.
I need to know before I can register.
Thanks. 8/4/2006 2:19:24 AM |

Unless they've fixed it, you used to be able to download the lectures with a valid unity login/password and by poking around a bit. You don't get credit for the courses that way, but it's free knowledge.
Most of the videos are in realplayer format. Lectures can be streamed live while class is being taught or downloaded after the class is complete. You might want to ask if they are actually taping live sessions this semester, or just putting up a previous semester. The individual size depends on the lecture time (50 vs 75 min). I remember the higher quality ones being about 200mb per lecture. I know I couldn't fit an entire course onto a 4.7GB DVD.

you get two links as far as I remember
One for downloading and one for streaming.
Or you could just right click and save as...
That's what I did.

i have taken to using real alternative http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm to watch those video lectures... it is small, free, and doesn't have any of the annoying crap that real comes with (or used to, haven't used it in forever...) 8/4/2006 5:59:52 PM |
