So I've got a fairly old computer. 5 yrs old almost. It's got 1300 MHz 1.28 GHz pentium 4 processor, 128 MB RAM; when my hardrive crashed, I installed 200 GB.

So, the 200 GB may have been a bit overkill, and now my computer's natural running slowly when multiple applications are running. I want to upgrade to 512 MB RAM, but is that fairly pointless with only 1.28 GHz?

Cool. I just wanted to make sure that I didn't need to upgrade my processor as well to notice any substantial difference in my computer's performance. And 512MB should be a significant enough increase over my current 128MB?

Also, from searching some other RAM topics here, it appears that I can add the new RAM to my pre-existing RAM as opposed to completely replacing it. That'd be pretty cool.

A RAM upgrade should make a big difference, especially if you are running Windows XP. What is the brand and model of your computer? That will determine how much you can add and if you have to replace your existing memory (not enough slots) Hopefully you are not using RDRAM since that is hella expensive. You can also use this program to give info about what RAM you have and slots that may be available. http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php The other option is to open the case and look.

I am running Windows XP Pro, altho my computer came with Windows me (which blew). It's a dell dimension 1800. Thanks for the info.

I don't think there is an 1800. If you mean 8100, you are not going to be able to upgrade unless you want to spend big bucks on RDRAM.

If it is RD you might want to invest in a new computer. That stuff is way too expensive for what you get.

If it's not - load up, you'll feel the difference.

And it is RD. I guess I'll have to transfer my new 200GB hardrive to a new computer. Is it like the RAM where I can just add it to the hardrive that comes with the new computer?

No you can not add RAM to the hd, they are different things.
