I'm going to Carolina Beach at the end of the month. I know there isn't much there, but its a nice place to go. Any suggestions on where to eat or what to do? I'm trying to find some nice places that don't just serve seafood. 8/7/2006 6:35:19 PM |

Britt's Doughnuts on the boardwalk are legendary.
If you have 4-wheel drive, go drive on the north point (now known as freeman park). You'll have to pay a little bit, but it's fun.
Drive down to Fort Fisher and tour the battleground...lots of cool civil war history.
Go to the Fort Fisher aquarium.
Take the ferry to Southport and go to antique shops. Eat at the Provision Company. The Pharmacy resturant is too pricy for what you get.
Drive to the riverfront in Wilmington, there's tons of shops and restuarants.
Take a 1/2 day charter boat from the docks at Carolina Beach.
Rent a sea kayak and take it in the waves or down to the basin at fort fisher (it's past the aquarium...shallow and protected from the waves)
Rent a bike and ride around the island.
Go fishing on the Carolina Beach pier. 8/7/2006 6:45:53 PM |

The dockhouse or pierhouse or something like that (it looks like it used to be a church) has really good food-- fancy but not overpriced, and they have seafood but other tasty stuff as well. I think their menu changes every day too. 8/7/2006 9:07:34 PM |

the beautiful thing about carolina beach is if you pick a motel in a good spot you can walk to EVERYTHING.
I have gone there before and drank for 30+ hours non-stop, you can walk to the party boat, 4-5 resturants, mulitple convenience stores, fast food places, surf shops, etc, etc.
The party boat is fun if you are like totally shit bombed. The cops down there dont really fuck with you either for being completely intoxicated, they just give you a lecture. I had one stop me when I was underage as shit and falling down and he chewed me out, gave me a lecture about how it would suck to have to come back down there for court, then gave me my ID back. ] 8/7/2006 9:16:13 PM |

I'm not going to the beach to drink - my husband and I do not agree with drinking Nor do I do drugs
I'm going to the beach to see the beach and to have a vacation - not to make a fool out of myself in a bar

^i think there are mostly "beach tourist" shops, what sort of shopping are you really looking for? there is a nice furniture store on the main road right when you get into town...they just built a new food lion shopping center in the past year but i dont think there is any shopping mostly just food and other little convenience places 8/7/2006 10:45:55 PM |

There really is no shopping in CB, if you want to shop take the ferry to Southport and you can walk to most shops there, or drive into Wilmington and go to the Cotton Exchange on the riverfront. Both trips take about 25 minutes to get there from CB, but it is good shopping.
I've been going to Carolina Beach several times a years since I was 3 months old...PM me if you have more questions. 8/8/2006 8:38:51 AM |

There are some arcades at the boardwalk thing, take some quarters. You can also go to the beah sober. I would skip the party boat, it probably will not be fun sober. 8/8/2006 8:40:10 AM |

Great selection of beer, "local flavor", you walk in the cooler to get your own beer or order VERY cheap pitchers of MGD, PBR, Bud Light, etc.
Great place, especially on bikini contest days. 8/8/2006 11:51:09 AM |

Carolina Beach is basically the armpit of the coast along with topsail and surf city. Basically all you can do is drink. I do remember there being a chili cookoff every summer though.
Oh yeah, don't even try and go on those party boats that they advertise on there. Jail bait.

I've only paid $40 on ink in 2 years which is a lot less than most people would spend drinking in a week 8/8/2006 1:03:24 PM |

I dont see how drinking yourself stupid when you are on vacation is dumber than drawing strange illustrations on your body by penetrating your skin with needles and ink that will remain there permanently. 8/8/2006 3:37:36 PM |

I just went a couple of weeks ago. There is a new restaurant I had not seen before across from Big Daddy's (going towards Kure beach from Carolina)... for the life of me I can't remember the name... but if you think it looks less refined due to the exterior as opposed to say... Big Daddy's or another place in the very close area, look past that and go in, they have damned good seafood and muuuch cheaper pricing than their neighbor there.
Aside Britt's and eating out the one time... I spent the whole fucking week on the beach... that is what I suggest doing... enjoy the beach8/8/2006 3:42:17 PM |

for food, britts and trolley stop are key.
for tourism, the fort is cool (if you like history and/or great scenery)
if you don't drink, don't mingle with the locals. 8/8/2006 4:07:55 PM |

Breakfast at the Gulf Stream Restaurant right across from the boats. Dinner is good there too, but breakfast is awesome. Drive down the main road towards Kure Beach and on down to Fort Fisher. There's the Aquarium that is very nice since the rennovations also Fort Fisher battlefield. It's an interesting place to spend a couple of hours at. There's all kinds of specialty shops all over, so walk around instead of driving. I've spent many summers down there. My grandparent's have a canal front condo and I know a lot of people around the area. Go up to the North End and check out the 4 wheel area, walk if you dont have 4 wheel drive. Check out the pier, all that kind of stuff. 8/10/2006 4:48:28 PM |
