And I had it coming, I know this.

I was driving someone else's car, and the cop never asked for proof of insurance. Is this abnormal?
I've already been told they tend to be more talkative than this cop:
"Do you know why I pulled you? Okay, license and registration plz."
...
"Here's your ticket. Your court date is [date]. Any questions? Okay. Keep your seat belt on and quit speeding".

Thats pretty normal.

I've gotten pulled over 6 times, gotten 4 tickets, and I've never been asked for my proof of insurance. And for some reason I still only have 2 points on my license.

What's a proof of insurance?

I thought you're supposed to call your insurance company whenever you need proof.

you only need proof of insurance if there is an accident.

Your insurance company should give you a card that gives your policy limits, policy number ete
get a lawyer.

Thanks!
I forgot about license points until just now.

I shouldn't expect 2 points (All other moving violations) for 13 over, should I?
^I'm not getting a lawyer for a speeding ticket. In fact, I plan to mark all mail they send me with return to sender, and cost them the return postage.

But unless you have a bad record, they usually drop it to 9 over anyways...unless it's abnormal speeding. I've always gotten pulled doing about 15 or 16 over...and they have always dropped it to 9 over.

^ i dunno the point value, but thats *way* more serious than speeding

"Failure to obey a traffic control device"

your insurance rates will probably double.

aren't speed limit signs traffic control devices?

not trying to be an ass here, this is the lounge; I've never been in trouble while in control of a vehicle, so I have no knowledge of the lingo.

is the car's plate the same as the state you're located? my girlfriend was pulled for doing 43 in a 30 and once he saw her louisiana tags, he didn't require proof of insurance.

Don't you have to have proof of insurance to even get a driver's license or your registration? So wouldn't asking for proof of insurance along with the other two be over-kill? Unless there has been an accident that needs to be filed, of course.

The car you use for the road test has to be legit.

Not everyone uses a car that they own.

makes sense about the registration being the proof of insurance. So what happens if you modify your insurance (company/coverage). Do you get a new policy number or does it remain the same?

they can tell if you've got insurance or not when they run your tag. insurance companies are required to report to the dmv when your coverage is dropped, and it will "mark" your tags.

most companies also report to the dmv when new coverage is started, but it's still a good idea to take proof when you register a vehicle. all of your neccessary info is on the registration card (company name and policy number).

in some other states they still require you to carry around that useless-ass card because their registrations don't have insurance info on them, or they don't have access to a database that'll tell them if your insurance is current or not

i love it when dumbasses say that it doesnt count anything against you when they drop it to 9 over...

it doesnt cost you a license point, but it WILL cost you an insurance point. period. end of discussion.

dont believe me? get a printout of what your insurance company has on your record and you will get a hell of a wakup.

get a damn lawyer, shell out a couple hundred for the service and the court costs and actually beat the ticket instead of being a dumbass.

don't get a lawyer......honestly, what can a lawyer do that you can't? Just dress in a nice suit, go AFTER their lunch break, admit guilt (THEY KNOW YOU"RE GUILTY, THE OFFICER SWORE ON IT AND THEY HEAR RETARDED ANNOYING EXCUSES ALL DAY LONG), and offer a retribution for complete dismissal of the case, such as 20 hours of community service. You may not want to do the comm. service, and thats fine, but dont bitch with your insurance goes up 40% for 3 straight years all b/c you forgot to slow down between that damn 45mph/35mph change on Gorman street near the avent ferry intersection where cops hide in the bushes.

Comm service? He had to have been arrested (doing way over 20mph+) for that to happen.

Close, but not quite. I stopped for the cop about 12 feet from the 35mph sign.

If community service were a way to avoid hiked insurance rates, there'd be a lot more community service being done.

I've already accepted I'll get a rate hike - but since I'm already paying an assload, even with USAA, it's not too big a deal. (inexperienced operator = ass rapage)

booger, are you saying you got that ticket at that 45/35 change on avent ferry? I had no idea.....lol....i hate that spot

sorry if i came off a bit harsh, the simple thing is, you want to do everything you possibly can to stay out of court and off your record, because it just isn't worth it in the long run. I dont know how bad your ticket was, but do everything you can from keeping it off your insurance, which includes community service if you have the option.

I got it just before the change. I was going 13 over.

Somehow, I don't think I'll be able to get out of this completely.

wrong. you've got it ass backwards, you get one license point for your first offense of 9 over or less. no insurance points.
Quote :

uh, a good lawyer can almost guarantee that it's completely thrown out, or at least reduced to a non moving violation.
Quote :

that's dumb as hell. any amount of community service, much less 20 hours, should be reserved for things much worse than a basic speeding ticket.

^ no shit, i got less community service than that for eluding and resisting, pay a lawyer $350 get it reduced to a non-moving, pay the fine and court costs and let it go. your insurance will go up more than that, and a radar detector would have paid for itself with one ticket

yall really think a lawyer will help?

I'd always been told that for minor tickets, lawyers are a waste of money.

Will student legal services be of any use in this situation?
