do these widgets run as services all the time? or just lagout the machine when someone goes to view the dashboard?

i really like the weather one... but then again I work outside, I have never figured out why people who work inside are so worried about the weather that we have 3 channels devoted stictly to the weather. that and the phone book and the calculator are the ones I use regularly

that and the Dictionary are really the only 2 I use

smoothcrim and joe - I think some widgets time-out and exit after a certain period of inactivity (the Weather widget being the only example I can think of). so if you're not regularly using Dashboard, they take up no/little memory and processor time, and there will be some lag when you try to reactivate it.

I was looking at my roommate's mac and he had like 100+ widgets and I was just amazed at how much shit he had. I was like in the time it takes you to sort through these widgets, you could have just gone to the webpage or app manually and not had to deal with the overhead of 98274937498734 services

i have the dictionary and the weather one up. i have a few instances of the weather, just so I can see what its like in various places... me in atlanta, parents in san francisco, friends in raleigh, and my gf's family in italy.

i also added the gmail widget last night to check the gmail account that i barely use, but feel like i should check it at least once a day

I like how PCs sell themselves and Macs have to remind people that "Macs are for cool people!".

DO you realize you can right-click any word to find its definition in OS X? You can even have it so that instead of opening up Dictionary.app it shows the definition in a tool tip. You have to set this up in the Dictionary.app preferences though.

But... as far as widgets, I have a binary/hex/decimal converter, the weather and the Ferengi Rules of Acquisition. Ocassionaly, I use a movie listings one that I keep around, and sometimes I use the sticky notes one.

You realize that normal people over the age of 25 with jobs and the like don't have time waste to play Half Life in LAN parties. Nor do they have time to worry about their computers throwin up the peace sign with a blue screen of death every 2 months. Or the multitude of virus definition updates, security patches, and ad/malware intrusions.

Generally speaking, time is money. I know for some of you college dweebs thats hard to understand right now... but I'm sure when you are mature enough you'll get the picture.

Anyone really want to throw down 4K+ for a brand new system that supports all of M$'s brand new DRM technologies either? Cuz you sure as hell won't be able to run Vista on your current beige box.

When Vista is released, a beige box probably could... and most people don't buy beige cases any more, they buy those retarded ones with colorful rainbow lights and stuff.

true, but that's only for applications that recognize the Dictionary service -- which, unfortunately, doesn't include Firefox at the moment (the dictionary mainly gets used for TWW )

If you move dictionary.app from the /Applications folder to something else, then it won't work.

I hate having all the apps in one giant folder, so I split them up into subfolders to make them more organized.

Yeah, that's a big gripe with OS X. Mostly because the OS has ways to get around that, and this was never a problem with OS 9.

I'm guessing a 486 with Windows 95 and no CDROM drive. I'll bet reloading the OS was a pain...
