http://www.cnn.com/ "Little League Walk Sparks Anger"

The direct link won't work, check CNNs main page for the video link.

Apparantly, they walked the power hitter to pitch to a weaker pitcher. Big fucking deal, that's the way sports are played. No one bitches in chess when I sacrifice a pawn so I can kill their queen. It is strategy. I cannot stand this pussification of American youth. And this father...oh my God what an absolute douchebag.

The complaint is that they walked the slugger to get to some weak kid w/ cancer. They were talking about this on Rome and I wanted to slice Rodger Lodges throat. It shouldn't matter if the kid had cancer, he is out there playing ball like a normal kid. And thats how baseball is played, the slugger already had hr and triple so you have to pitch around him. Who cars if the kids have fun. Winning is everything, this is why this country is full of whiners and babies. Everyone wants you to play fair. When I was a b-ball coach the first thing I told my kids is the only way to fun is to win, because losing sucks ass.

I would have did the same thing without a 2nd thought.

If you want your kid to have special treatment, go do the special olympics.

What about all the players on other team? Should they be hurt because this one kid gets special treatment?

Yes, it's terrible what the kid has gone through, but it's sports & that's how you play the game.

And besides it looks like this may have inspired to kid to practice more.

that's the last thing the fucking kid with cancer wants. He wants to be a normal kid. He doesn't want to be singled out. He's playing with normal kids in an attempt to be normal. Leave the kid alone. Goddamn.

The first thought that came to my head was if the kid with cancer is so weak, then why is he hitting behind cleanup?

When the winning coach got asked about how he felt, he should responded with, "Would you like to see my championship trophy?"

They did play fair. You are allowed to walk the slugger. I mean, I was a shitty baseball player for a few years too, and I often got walked to and I often struck out. But every time they walked to me I was excited about the chance to do something and be the winner. Everyone expects the kid with cancer to stike out, so he has a low bar. He hits the winning single and everyone thinks he's king. That's what sports is all about.

guess so

that bitch of a dad should've been grateful for the opportunity his kid had to win the game. I mean, that could've been a moment he would've remembered forever. Now he'll remember this forever, but only for his dad's douchebaggery.

fuck that. we're feminizing our children too much. You go out there to do your best and win. If that means walk a batter, then walk the batter.

fuck that "feeling" shit. You don't want to strike out? Go to the batting cages.

It doesn't matter who wins or loses, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't take it seriously.
You should have fun playing the game win or lose, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be elated to win and a bit disappointed to lose.

yeah, nothing like an 8-9 year old league championship trophy to make you feel like a badass.

you realize this is an instructional league, yes? they're not even allowed to pitch run, but they're going to intentionally walk to a kid with cancer? call me a woman, whatever, that's lame.

instructional. That's right. When the kid who is up has a runner on 3rd and you're up by 1 in the 9th with 2 outs, you walk the guy who has already homered and tripled in the game.

That's instruction.

i've always thought walking a good hitter is a wimp move. To me you're saying we're not good enough to stop you. baseball is for babies anyway.

it's a chess match. Call it a wimp move. I don't care. But you don't sit there and pitch against their most powerful offensive weapon if you don't have to. You give a little (a walk) to get a little (a win).

you do realize these kids are 9 and 10, right? it shouldn't be all about winning at that age, it should be about learning how to play the game, appreciate it and have fun. Admittedly this is a somewhat complicated situation. this was also the first intentional walk in that league if what i've heard from some sports people is true.

YOU ARE LEARNING HOW TO PLAY THE GAME! NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PITCH TO THAT KID WITH THE SITUATION AS IT WAS! TO DO SO WOULD TO DEAL THE KIDS A DETRIMENT IN HOW THE GAME WORKS.

STFU.

I understand the strategy behind it, I just don't like it. At that age though, I don't think they should allow intentional walks. It should be about learning sportsmanship and having fun, everyone gets a turn, etc. As you get older and more serious about the sport, is when the rules should change and you play "for real".

If you disallow intentional walks, that means you'll be giving the kids their first lesson in acting. "OK kids, let me show you how to walk a batter without looking like you meant to walk a batter."

That's retarded. Go by the rulebook.

The fundamentals of the rulebook should never change. Ok so you move the mound closer for little league because arms aren't developed yet. Oh well. But the semantics of the game should never change.

can you steal bases at all levels? I don't think so. You go through coach pitch before pitched by the other team don't you? So what's the difference? So for the first few levels you have to pitch to ever batter, then when you decide to stick with it and move up, you're now allowed to strategize a little more so okay now you can steal bases and intentionally walk players. The rules change in some fashion through every level in every sport basically. Why would not allowing intentional walks be any different?

I only played T-ball and backyard baseball with the boys, so I don't remember how it works anymore. I quit on baseball a long time ago.

What if it was the utah state championship game and it was for a trip to regionals and eventually the little league world series? That probably wasnt the case but it still meant at least a league championship...you can't tell me it doesn't matter who wins and loses because it does matter to every single one of those kids who has spent hours practicing. I remember when I was 8 I switched to a more competitive league so I could play for championships rather than fun.

Also, i think it can be seen from the video that the dad probably never played sports as a kid and doesn't really understand the strategy involved in a baseball game and how much it means to some of the players which may be why he is complaining.

don't they deserve his best?

intentional walks are a coach's decision, so 8 year olds don't need to be taught when to do it. besides, it's not as if it's an extensive lesson that needs to be reinforced for years, it takes about 1 minute to explain. at this age they should just be learning how to play the game, have you ever seen an 8-9 year old baseball game? when to intentional walk is the last of the things that these kids need to learn how to do. on that note, a "championship" in a league like this couldn't be more meaningless.

I dont have time to read it right now. I will when I get back

but I can't fucking stand whiny parents.. I coached little league this spring and we had 1 parent that yelled at EVERYONE. I couldnt stand it. two or three times the coaches on my team considered asking the ump to throw him out.

he almost incited two fights between him and parents of the other teams.

Part of me is upset cause these are like 8 year old kids. Three days from now they will be more excited about a new nintendo DS game than what happened in a little league championship game. The other part of me wants to know what the hell the parents expected by putting their sick kid onto a youth recreational sports team.

^Exactly, go to a Church league if you want a good time with no real competitiveness.
You say "kids just want to have fun and play the game" but that's total bullshit. I've seen kids get SUPER competitive about a board game, much less a league championship in anything.

My 8 year old cousin challenged me to a nerf championship with tagets. I whipped his ass because I don't believe in going soft on children to make them feel better. I simply showed him that if he got better, he might win.

Another cousin of mine was 10 when he challenged me to tennis. I'd played varsity for 2 years then, so I beat the daylights out of him. It inspired him to do better and now he's ranked in his state and can make me cry on the court (he's 13).

As onorio said already, the cancer kid should have been happy to have a chance to win the game and then a bit disappointed that he didn't do it. Now he'll practice and get better. I'm sorry he needs a shunt in his brain to live, that blows, but he just needs to deal with his handicap...its life.

he wanted to be treated like a regular kid, right? not like some special cancer survivor kid, right?

i have much respect for the kid though...the day after it happened he told his dad "Dad...I'm gonna go work on my hitting"...kids got determination

also the father was on the Dan Patrick Show the other day...basically said a few days after the game they were all over it and done with it...they had moved on...they didnt think anymore about the game...then the media blew up the spot and hyped it up

interesting debate nonetheless
