pretty much how you'd expect

Quote :
"Soon, however, it came out how Magic had contracted the disease, from frequent, unprotected sex. Stories circulated about his ability to attract women like a rock star, picking them out of the crowd and having his hangers-on bring them into the locker room after the game.

it doesn't matter though, because he is living testament to the fact that if you have money enough to afford the A-list treatment, apparently you can avoid dying, or at least stave it off for a long time

yep, AIDS is a much more severe disease that is caused by HIV but an HIV infection alone won't kill you.

Current regimes of antiretro virals can keep viral levels down to nearly undectable levels, but HIV likes to hide out in hard to reach cells so we can't really fully erradicate it from ones body yet...

Perhaps, but what about Freddie Mercury? Surely he had the money to afford A-list treatment, although I suppose you have to consider medical advances over the years. I'm no expert on HIV treatment.

[Edited on August 14, 2006 at 11:30 AM. Reason : also, Mercury had AIDS]

Mercury died in '91, when we still didn't know much about HIV/AIDS.

These days, most people with HIV can lead a normal life if they're placed on antiretroviral therapy. Those pills are incredibly expensive, though.

There is a theory that Magic Johnson's virus was detected early enough that the anti-retroviral drugs eliminated the HIV....or that he was exposed to the virus, but was never infected. His HIV virus is currently in remission basically because it is undetectable in his blood. This is incredibly rare, but it does happen. The fact that he was a professional athlete in incredible physical condition helps his case becaues his body can withstand treatment better than usual.

I remember him in an interview, I think on 60 Minutes, talking about how he had a "sevensome?" in an elevator.

Treatment could be affordable now, its the damn medical companies price gouging for their products. You can go to India and get basically the same AIDS medicine that would cost you tens of thousands a year here for a few hundred a year. But it is illegal to make generic products of those medicines, even if it would help thousands of poorer people, and some in the medical industry are trying to stop them from making generic HIV treatments worldwide, which would make it impossible for most people in the third world with AIDS to pay for treatment.

^ you can get on treatment programs and such still, even if you are poor.

nowadays there are many charities who's sole purpose is providing drug programs to poor folks...

the biggest deal is getting tested regularly for HIV, once it actually gets to AIDS you are more or less fucked

Quit yer bitching. If not for those medical companies and their high drug prices, we wouldn't even have AIDS treatments right now. The high prices pay for R&D on future drugs.
