Rookie of the Year:
AL: Tough choice now because Liriano is out, I'd have to go with Verlander (liriano, jered weaver and papelbon will all be in the running)
NL: Josh Johnson

MVP:
AL: gotta to go with Big Papi (i know he's a DH but his good numbers are too hard to pass up)
NL: Pujols

Manager of the Year:
AL: definitely Leyland
NL: Willie Randolph

Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year:
AL: Papelbon (although Rivera can make a late run)
NL: Wagner

Cy Young:
AL: Johan Santana
NL: Zambrano

Douchebags of the Year:
Teixeira and Jeff Kent (both picks killed my fantasy squad this year)

i'm probably leaving out someone and maybe another award
so input and discussion are necessary

ever since varitek got hurt, the whole team's ERA went up
papelbon's ERA has been around 3.5 since varitek got hurt
he had a good outing last night versus the tigers; 1-2-3 inning and the save

i think you'll get a good glimpse at who's gonna be the AL relief pitcher of the year and the MVP this weekend when the red sox play the yankees

Where is the thread with predictions in it?

Rookie of the Year:
AL: Papelbon. Boston is not in the playoff race without this kid. To close in that type of atmosphere as a rookie is sensational. (Should've been Liriano had he not gotten hurt)
NL: Ryan Zimmerman. Probably leads most if not all rookies in HR, RBIs and he's done most of his best hitting late in games. Clutch.

MVP:
AL: David Ortiz. Most clutch player I've seen in a long time. Leads majors in most power categories. Nuff said.
NL: Carlos Beltran. Leader of best team in NL, has been consistently good all year.

Manager of the Year:
AL: Leyland. No arguing here.
NL: Joe Girardi. With a payroll less than what 5 Yankees players make by themselves, he still has the team within wild card distance. Basically a Triple-A team with Cabrera and Willis being exceptions.

Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year:
AL: Rivera. Papelbon is close but Rivera is still the cream of the crop.
NL: Wagner. Has struggled this year but so has every other NL closer. Saito has been lights out for Dodgers but only inherited the job after Gagne went down, not enough opportunities.

Cy Young:
AL: Santana. Still the best pitcher out there. Filthy stuff, plays in hardest division in baseball and still dominates hitters.
NL: Zambrano. How he's been so good this year playing for that team is amazing. He deserves it but won't get it because of that fact. Will prob go to Webb or Schmidt.

^^Schmidt will NOT get the Cy Young.

Carpenter has came on strong and should finish good and compete to repeat.

I think Schmidt has just as good a chance as either Webb or Carpenter. They all have very similar numbers with the exception of wins. But the Giants always make a late push every year. If neither Giants nor Dbacks make playoffs, it will probably go to Carpenter.

^schmidt is 9-7 on a team that is in last place; he has no chance at Cy Young
carpenter has a small chance and the Cy Young will be between Webb and Zambrano
Zambrano is 13-5 on a shitty team with much more Ks than anyone in the NL
and Webb has been solid all year

and...

Rookie of the Year:
AL: Justin Verlander
NL: Ryan Zimmerman

MVP:
AL: David Ortiz
NL: Carlos Beltran

Manager of the Year:
AL: Jim Leyland
NL: Girardi (though I really wanted to say Willie)

Rolaids Relief Pitcher of the Year:
AL: BJ Ryan (has accounted for fewer losses then anyone in the AL at the closer position)
NL: Billy Wagner (best of a very undistinguished group of NL closers)

Cy Young:
AL: Johan Santana, Justin Verlander, Roy Halladay (take your pick)
NL: Brandon Webb (though if he falters and Johnson wins 5-6 more it's close IMO)

^Because everyone has constantly sucked off Verlander and Liriano.

Verlander just because he throws a 100 MPH. Even though he is starting to struggle and lost his last outing.

Liriano is hurt now and lost his only big start against Detroit.

yea, if Weaver can keep it going and the Angels make the playoffs, he's definitely going to be the leading candidate for ROY

and how about a case for Soriano for NL MVP? he's on pace for 40-40 as a leadoff hitter! provided his team has long given up on the playoffs but he's definitely having his career year despite not having much lineup protection.

I'm waiting to see him go through the league the second time. If he can prove that he can do that then he will be the frontrunner. Frankly, I don't think he'll be near as good as either Verlander or Liriano. They both dominate with their stuff. Weaver dominates more with a deceptive release, which is much easier to adjust to then dominant stuff..

start paying attention to what is going on

he has pitched his last 2 games with a blister on his middle finger

against the sox he could only throw a fatball and changeup because of his blister

^Dude take your Tiger blinders off and be honest.

When Liriano got hurt and pitched bad you were all over it because he lost to the Tigers and you said it was because he faced a good team.

That's about all he throws anyway. I mean when you throw 100, there are not many other choices.

i would agree with the fact that he has the numbers to get the MVP
although, it has been proven many years that the best hitting player doesn't always win the MVP and you must be on a playoff team to have a good chance at the MVP

i'd say jeter for AL MVP now
and i got stick with pujols in the NL; beltran is probably 2nd in the running right now though

jesus, you cant make an arguement if you dont know the player you are talking about

verlander throws a knuckle curve, a circle change, a slider and a 4 seam fastball

There is MAYBE 4-5 people on here that actually know what they are talking about on a consistent basis here. Verlander wouldn't have the numbers he has [as a starter] with only two pitches, no matter how hard he throws. You can get away with that out of the pen but not in a rotation in the bigs.

As I said.. Weaver has a deceptive release. It should be interesting to see how the league adjusts to him and what he does.. It's pretty obvious, to me at least, that Liriano and Verlander get by on their stuff more then deception... which is generally better for longterm success...

Weaver does have to use deception but it doesn't make him any worse of a pitcher. You don't have to throw it at 95+ mph to have success, just ask Greg Maddux. But I do agree that in terms of stuff, Liriano has the nastiest stuff and Verlander has four extremely effective pitches that he can throw for strikes at any time and they are more likely to have more success than Jered. In terms of this year though, with Liriano being out and Verlander already having pitched more innings than his arm EVER has, Weaver has more of a chance to win ROY especially since he did not get into the rotation til Bartolo got hurt. If Weaver should falter his second time around the league and Verlander continues to struggle, Papelbon will sneak it out in my opinion.

Chris Duncan for NL ROY. Just got named NL player of the week.

If he had just played enough....he is hitting .345 with 14 HRs and 39 RBIs in only 55 games!

Im a little biased but damn if those aren't some numbers.

Pujols and Beltran are dueling it out but Ryan Howard also deserves some consideration for NL MVP. He probably won't get it but he is certainly in the Top 3 w/ Soriano 4th...

Beltran likely will win since the Mets have all but clinched the best record in the NL (10 games up on the league) and there is a very real chance he will break the alltime major league record for XBH in a year for a CFer... (Held by Hack Wilson and Willie Mays)

** Oh and I know the fact that Pujols missed some time is always brought up but he only has roughly 20 ABs less then Beltran.. that is pretty negligible..

NL MVP debate: Pujols or Howard?
NL Cy Young: Carpenter or Webb?
AL MVP: Papi, Dye, Jeter, Santana, Morneau?
AL Cy Young: Santana, Halladay, Verlander, Garland?
NL ROY: Johnson, Zimmerman, Uggla, Ramirez?
AL ROY: Verlander, Weaver, Liriano

What is everyone's thoughts? ST is dead today.

Ive listed them in order I would vote.

Rookie of the year Simple
AL Verlander he is the only good rookie STILL playing. and how played a full season
NL Josh Johnson

MVP AL Derek Jeter. Simple reason team won the division unlike Ortiz, plus he actually plays a position. A DH should never win the MVP. If he was the most valuable player he would contribute to defense as well as offense.
MVP NL lets go with Howard he is hitting the most longballs

Relief pitcher
AL Rivera- he is still pitching unlike Papelbon who if he hadn't been shut down early should have won.
NL Wagner

no i certainly do...hell since 84 (?) when the won the WS, they kinda fell off the map...IIRC they were decent for a couple years with Cecil Fielder...but I'm saying IF they dont hold on to that huge, supposedly unsurpassable AL Central league, and make the playoffs as a wildcard team, or heaven forbid, miss the playoffs if Minn and CHISOX both play out the season well, you have to give consideration to Dodgers, Cincinnatti, Minnesota, etc

if they make the playoffs I'd pretty much agree that it should be him, but the Dodgers had a pretty similar shitty record last year IIRC

^^ How the Dodgers and Reds do has no bearing on whether or not Leyland deserves the AL Manager of the Year. Leyland should win it hands down regardless and the only other managers I think deserve some mention are Gardenhire and Torre.

um...really?

Howard is a damn good hitter, but I think Pujols should win - and I'll try not to be too much of a homer here.

The ONLY areas where Howard has the clear advantage are HR and RBI (important stats to be sure, though not as much as SLG or OBP), and without the injury, Pujols would almost certainly have more RBI, and probably 50-something homers.

Pujols, on the other hand, has a higher OBP, BA, and (incredibly, despite having 11 fewer HR) a higher SLG%. He also has more game-winning hits/HR/RBI, fields his position better, has 6 stolen bases to Howard's 0 (which is indicative of how aggressively he runs the bases, which I haven't seen Howard display), and more runs scored - remember, 17 fewer games. He's also hitting .397 with runners in scoring position, while Howard is hitting .239 in the same situation.
Furthermore, Pujols kept the Cardinals in it dealing with injuries to Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, and Eckstein.

But I think the most eye-popping statistics is this: Howard's walk-to-strikeout ratio is 94:170, while Pujols' is 84:44. For those keeping track, that's MORE HOME RUNS THAN STRIKEOUTS. I would almost say I don't see how you can argue against Pujols for MVP.

However, having said that, Howard is exciting, hits the ball a ton, and has carried the Phillies, especially the last month. At this point, I'd say if Philadelphia makes the playoffs it's Howard; otherwise, Pujols gets it.

We will see. Pujols has 25 game winning RBIs. That is crazy. Plus he has a MUCH higher BA, OBP, and Slugging. Don't forget he did miss 17 games.

P.S. Albert's team is assuredly in the playoffs, if the Phils don't make it, that might swing things.
