ever 10 or so years we get hit with a terror attack. and in those attacks a couple thousand people die

whoop dee fucking dooo

more people die each day because of poor healthcare

more people die each day becasue they do not get enough food to eat

why live our lives in constant fear?

Me, I'd rather die on my feet then live on my knees.

"more people die each day because of poor healthcare

That affects other parts of society. The randomness of terrorism means it can hit anyone. Knowing theres a %100 chance several poor people who aren't you will die isn't as scary as knowing that there is a small % chance that you could die.

The food, for one, is not an issue in this country. Thousands of people do not starve to death in the US every day, or even, I should think, every ten years -- and if they do, it isn't from lack of availability of food that they can afford, it's because of some psychological problem they have.

The health care...well, I've always been about socializing me some health care, so I won't argue.

And while I would also rather die on my feet than live on my knees, I'd rather kill the other son of a bitch before he can kill me and just, well, live on my feet.

There was one arab attack between 93-01

I don't count white militant christians or wacked out nutjobs.

World trade 1 (the first attempt) failed miserably

I'm more scared of white militant christians than arabs

and white militant christians don't attack airplanes

you think the families of the maintenance crew guys who were eating lunch in their basement office when the van exploded think the attack went miserably?

but of course, it failed because it didnt knock down the tower(s)...doesnt change the fact that it was a terrorist attack on us soil

^haha

Sigh. Another "why do we even bother trying to fix problem x when problems y and z are out there" argument.

Hey, I've got one. Minimum wage isn't enough to live on. Boo hoo. There are more people that are unemployed than there are people that work at minimum wage, so we shouldn't even think about issues related to minimum wage.

Feel free to shove global terrorism under the rug and only address it when the number of terrorist deaths is greater than the number of people dying of hunger/no Blue Cross - Blue Shield. As for me I'll encourage our elected officials to give attention to more than one problem concurrently.

And since this is a troll thread to begin with:

"why live our lives in constant fear?"

Like the people afraid to even come out of their homes?

::sigh::

Another pseudointellectual falls victim to the strawman.

For the curious...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man

Quote :
"To "set up a straw man" or "set up a straw-man argument" is to create a position that is easy to refute, then attribute that position to the opponent. A straw-man argument can be a successful rhetorical technique (that is, it may succeed in persuading people) but it is in fact misleading, because the opponent's actual argument has not been refuted."

As I've already said in a different thread...

http://www.brentroad.com/message_topic.aspx?topic=425614&page=5#9152162

Quote :
"Gamecat: Step 1a: While doing so, finish up what we have started in Afghanistan and Iraq, but begin a slow but steady move away from playing up the threat of terrorism publicly, and move the real fight back into covert territory.

The cold hard fact of the matter is that you're more likely to die in an auto accident than in a terrorist act by a factor of 85 to 1. Terrorism is important, and we must address it seriously, but doing so should be a part of our government's job, not it's all-consuming obsession. It already has the democratic mechanics to efficiently fight terror without making a spectacle of itself, and should be able to do so with relative ease now that it has not one but two versions of the Patriot Act on the books."

Evidently he didn't. Or he failed reading comprehension. Or he doesn't grasp basic logic. Or some combination of all three.

Are you suggesting I roll my eyes to help me see where nutsmackr said to "shove global terrorism under the rug and only address it when the number of terrorist deaths is greater than the number of people dying of hunger/no BCBS?"

Because keeping my eyes focused on the words you quoted sure doesn't seem to be helping any...

or are you going to complain that he didnt literally use the phrase "under the rug" so therefore i am completely wrong

Was the bolded word really that subtle?

It has a fuckton more to do with the fact that jbtilley says nutsmackr or anyone else is sugesting we ONLY address terrorism when the number of terrorist deaths is greater than the number of people dying of hunger/no BCBS. As if government is somehow some zero sum organization that only has the resources to do one thing at a time.

Reorienting the public perception of the threat, say...according to its actual likelihood to occur, has absolutely NOTHING to do with sweeping global terrorism under the fucking rug. The government's made terrorism a priority, and it should be, but remote probabilities are receiving a level of attention and reaction as if they were daily occurrences in our own lives when they are anything but.
