i guess its possible he made some deflections of course i'd like to see what this turkish newspaper said about his key defensive plays 8/22/2006 1:05:04 PM |

its very possible to play good defense on your man (say to force a bad pass/turnover) or good help defense (say to cause a travel or something), and that isn't going to show up in the box 8/22/2006 1:06:46 PM |

like i said i'd like to read the article
it just seems like saying he had some key plays is like when you take the kid from the team who isnt really good and give him the "hustle award" or the "sportsmanship award" because he's not good enough for MVP, defensive player of the year, etc 8/22/2006 1:14:31 PM |

I'm not saying Atsur is a lockdown defender, but you certainly cannot judge defensive ability by looking at a box score. 8/22/2006 3:13:37 PM |

any way of getting a google translation? i hope engin does great and i'm not knocking on him...but in 20 minutes of play here are his numbers:
Minutes: 20 FGM/FGA: 1/2 FTM/FTA: 1/2 ASSISTS: 4 REBS: 2 STEALS: 0 BLOCKS: 0
maybe he got all his numbers towards the end of the game to be key plays...but its not like his numbers were great 8/22/2006 3:54:26 PM |

the game report in the end of this article gave him 3 stars (highest in the team). the star system is a really popular grading method of performance in Europe and yet its amazingly arbitrary and subjective. Still, looks like he had a pretty solid game..

Quote : | "Turkey’s win dampens Qatar hopes Web posted at: 8/24/2006 2:4:21 Source ::: agencies Turkey’s Engin Atsur (left) fights for the ball against Qatar’s Ali Turki Ali.
HAMAMATSU, Japan • Twelve points from US college star Engin Atsur inspired Turkey to their fourth straight win at the World Basketball Championship with a 76-69 victory yesterday over struggling Qatar.
Accurate shooting from North Carolina State’s Engin, backed by able help from Cenk Akyl (10 points) and Ender Arslan (10 points), allowed Turkey to relax in the fourth quarter knowing they are safely into the next round.
Ali Saeed was Qatar’s standout, with 20 points to his name. A wild card entry, the Turks will play Greece today to decide who tops Group C.
Qatar, who are 0-4, have only a slim chance of staying in the competition and must beat Australia today.
Turkey, which rested veteran guard Ibrahim Kutluay who has an injured ankle, went on a 16-2 run in the first quarter to end with their nose 27-16 in front.
They stretched the lead to 20 points in the second frame before Ali Saeed helped Qatar peg it back to 49-35 at the break. Turkey’s coach, Tanjevic used his bench to the full in the second half which gave Qatar a glimmer of hope as they clawed to within seven points. But it was too little too late from the Asian championship bronze medallists.
Qatar’s American coach Joey Stiebing said it had been a learning experience for his young side which has never before played at this level.
“Turkey played great teamwork which is what I really like about their team,” he said.
“We were lethargic in the first half but better in the second. Our team is young to be playing at this level but if we can combine two halves together like our second half today we could give some teams a run for their money.”
Meanwhile, Carmelo Anthony delivered the United States through their toughest test, beating stubborn Italy to join Argentina and Spain as top play-off seeds.
National Basketball Association star forward Anthony scored 35 points, 19 in the third quarter to match Italy’s total in the period, and rallied the US team from a 45-36 half-time deficit that was as big as 12 points in the second half.
“In the second half, we could have easily folded,” Anthony said. “In the locker room I looked in everybody’s eyes. No one had given up. Everybody was on the same page.
“We got together at half-time and said, ‘It’s either this or nothing.’”
The Americans outscored Italy 35-19 in the third quarter and held off Italy in the final minutes of the Group D title-clinching round-robin contest.
Miami Heat star guard Dwyane Wade added 26 points and Elton Brand had 16. Marco Belinelli led Italy with 25 points.
“We controled the tempo in the second quarter,” Italy center Richard Rocca said. “You can’t let down against them.”
Argentina pounded Nigeria 98-64 to clinch the Group A crown, with NBA stars Andres Nocioni and Emanuel Ginobili leading the way with 23 and 20 points respectively.
“This game was real important for us. We knew that if we win we will be number one in our group,” Argentina coach Sergio Hernandez said.
Pau Gasol, another NBA star, scored 28 points to lift the Spaniards past African champion Angola 93-83 in a battle of unbeatens that sealed the top spot in Group B thanks to a tie-breaker edge on the only foes who can equal them.
“Pau had difficulty in playing against the athletic team not only in shooting but also in defensive rebounding,” Spain coach Pepu Hernandez said. “They showed they are a big team.”
Unbeaten Group C leaders Greece and Turkey will meet Thursday to decide the last top seed. The European champion Greeks beat Brazil 91-80.
“We tried all we could to stifle their defence and it worked so I am very satisfied that we are 4-0. We have a few injury problems but overall we are in good shape,” said Turkey coach Bogdan Tanjevic.
Germany clinched a play-off spot but eight more remain up for grabs in today’s final round-robin matches.
National Basketball Association star Dirk Nowitzki scored 25 points to lead Germany past winless Panama 81-63 to clinch a berth in Group B.
Real Madrid guard Igor Rakocevic scored 26 points while NBA Orlando Magic center Darko Milicic added 18 to power the Serbs past Venezuela 90-65 in a Group A mess made crazier by Lebanon’s 74-73 upset of France. Fadi El Khatib scored 29 points to spark the shocker, which leaves Lebanon, France and the Serbs on 2-2 and Nigeria and Venezuela on 1-3.
Thursday’s games find Lebanon playing Nigeria, France facing Venezuela and the Serbs against Argentina.
“There is no magic here, this is just me. I had a great match up and it was hard for them to defend me,” an elated El Khatib said after the match.
China defeated Senegal 100-83 to sustain their hopes of reaching the 16-team knockout rounds that begin Saturday at Saitama, and Lithuania improved their chances by beating Australia 78-57.
Australia, who are 1-3, must beat Qatar today to stand any chance of making the next phase.
The Chinese face a must-win showdown today with Slovenia, which defeated Puerto Rico 90-82 to pull even with the Caribbean rivals at 2-2 in Group B, one game ahead of China.
Yao, a 2.26m center for the NBA Houston Rockets, scored 26 points while Chinese NBA pioneer Wang Zhi-Zhi added 19 for previously winless China. “It was a big difference,” Yao said. “It’s like the first cup of water after 10 days (in the desert).”" |

from the article:
Engin Atsur buried two crucial three-pointers in the final four minutes for his only two baskets of the game. Turkey appeared ready to turn the ball over on a shot clock violation, but Atsur hit a three-pointer as the buzzer went off, tieing the game at 74-74. Just a minute later he hit another three-pointer - this one well behind the line - to pull Turkey within 79-77 "He (Engin Atsur) doesn't have a big experience at international level, but he's got a big heart and you see that on the court today," Erdogan said of Atsur.
