I don't know if you've seen this over on PackPride, but just in case you haven't, here it is:

First of all, here is what the NCAA currently says about non-qualifiers:

Quote :
"14.3.2.1 Nonqualifier. A nonqualifier is a student who has not graduated from high school or who,at the time specified in the regulation (see Bylaw 14.3), presented neither the core-curriculum
grade-point average and SAT/ACT score required for a qualifier.

14.3.2.1.1 Eligibility for Aid, Practice and Competition. An entering freshman with no previous
college attendance who was a nonqualifier at the time of enrollment in a Division I
institution shall not be eligible for regular-season competition or practice during the first
academic year in residence. However, such a student shall be eligible for nonathletics institutional
financial aid that is not from an athletics source and is based on financial need only,
consistent with institutional and conference regulations. (Revised: 1/10/95 effective 8/1/96
for those student-athletes first entering a collegiate institution on or after 8/1/96)
(Note: The flow chart in Figure 14-3 shows the relationships between academic requirements,
recruitment, financial aid and eligibility.)

14.3.2.2 Practice-Session Attendance. A student-athlete who is a nonqualifier and who, therefore,
is not eligible for practice may not attend any practice sessions in any capacity, nor may the
student-athlete attend any meeting characterized as practice (see Bylaw 17.02.1). (Revised:
1/10/95 effective 8/1/96 for those student-athletes first entering a collegiate institution on or
after 8/1/96, 1/9/96 effective 8/1/96 for those student-athletes first entering a collegiate institution
on or after 8/1/96 )

14.3.2.3 Outside Competition — Nonqualifier. A nonqualifier may participate in the institution’s
intramural program (provided the intramural team is not coached by a member of the
institution’s athletics department staff), but during the first year of enrollment, such an individual
is not permitted to practice or compete on an institutional club team or on an outside sports
team."

Now, here is what Bunting has said about Aleric Mullins:

Quote :
"Tomorrow's hot topic in the newspapers will likely be the status of Aleric Mullins. Here's Bunting's comments on him: "Aleric has been cleared by the clearinghouse to come to North Carolina to go to school, practice, and train but will not be allowed to play this year. After this year he'll have three years of eligibility left. If he meets certain criteria by that third year, he'll be able to earn another year.""

Remember the rule?

Quote :
"An entering freshman with no previous
college attendance who was a nonqualifier at the time of enrollment in a Division I
institution shall not be eligible for regular-season competition or practice during the first
academic year in residence."

Also, Bunting has called him a "Partial Qualifier". That designation has been removed from the NCAA regulations for about a year now. You are either a qualifier or not.

Furthermore, the ACC has never allowed its member institutions (they're saying on the State board -- I haven't found a link for this) to accept a non-qualifier.

Also interesting from the rules:

Quote :
"However, such a student shall be eligible for nonathletics institutional
financial aid that is not from an athletics source and is based on financial need only,
consistent with institutional and conference regulations."

This guy wasn't cleared by the NCAA, yet UNC is going to admit him and give him financial aid?

What makes it all the sweeter is that in the past, Bunting has said he wouldn't take a prep-school kid (the usual route for a non-qualifier), like 'other' schools (meaning us) would. Now they're re-writing the rule books so they don't have to (and I think they've already taken a prep-school kid or too after making that statement anyway). How much you wanna bet this kid doesn't get 1/10 of the attention and punishment that Tramain Hall got?

"Did someone say flip-flop?"

This thread was voted for by John Kerry, before he voted against it.

bunting always tries to drag our program through the mud, so this is worth noting.

this situation is interesting, the kid practiced for 14 days, then is a "partial" qualifier, which doesn't even exist....would like to see some explanation on this.

NC State conspiracy theory buffs obviously.. I know I sure don't. Every school in the country 'cheats' in one form or another. If you cheat enough you'll get caught. If not? Well then who cares?
