i know i'm in the minority since the Carolina Whalers just won the cup, but I'm curious to know if there are any Devs fans in Raleigh. or any hockey fans who haven't just picked up the sport last may. j/k.

Do not call Carolina the Whalers

while NC may not be known for hockey, there are plenty of people on here (and in NC) that are hockey fans, and have been that way for a long time. a fair amount of them play or have played hockey as well. i believe vinylbandit is a goalie. as for myself, i grew up in Charlotte and started playing ice hockey when i was 4 years old, and played it regularly up until i came to college. i'll probably join an adult league once i graduate. so what's your story nj? why did you decide to come down here for graduate study? do you play? some of the users tried to organize some pickup games on here a while back.

I play hockey, have for 15 years. I love it and I love the Carolina Hurricanes.

I was probably the only one on here that was at the groundbreaking of the RBC Center with Peter Karmanos, the mayor, etc. and I've never heard of a team called the Carolina Whalers. Come to think of it I've never heard of the Pheonix Jets or Colorado Nordiques either

other than that, I welcome hockey fans - not douchebag fans however. So, which one will you be?

For the record, NJ fans were my enemies, but Buffalo have taken over than position.

Welcome to Raleigh.

my favorite carolina-jersey game was the first one in their playoff series this year where the annoucers kept stroking brodeur's ego, saying how amazing he was and how he eats trees and shits victory

that was the game brodeur chose to leave the ice rather than let in the 7th goal

That game was totally brilliant. The best part was seeing the confusion on the bench as he pulled himself. As a fan of Roy, I never liked Brodeur (or Hasek for that matter, though I've always admired the complexity of Hasek's system). I remember watching as the series continued, not seeing a lot of active hands, and thinking, "Holy shit, they're conciously attacking him low where he's vunerable." Good shit.

^x9 that is definitely one of my top ten favorite Seinfeld episodes.

Puddy enters wearing a Devils' jersey and red and green paint all over his face.

Elaine: What the--

Puddy: So what do you think?

Elaine: What is that?

Puddy: I painted my face.

Elaine (still in disbelief): You painted your face?

Puddy: Yeah.

Elaine: Why?

Puddy: You know, support the team.

Elaine: Well, you can't walk around like that.

Puddy: Why not?

Elaine: Because it's insane?

Puddy: Hey, you gotta let them know you're out there, this is the playoffs.

There's a knock at the door, Puddy answers it. It's Jerry and Kramer. Kramer
enters first and does a typical 'Kramer take' when he sees Puddy's painted face.
He recovers quickly.

Kramer: Hey.

Puddy: Hey.

Elaine: Dave, um, painted his face.

Kramer: Yeah, that's cool. Well, you gotta support your team.

Puddy: Ok, ready to go?

Kramer: Yeah.

Puddy (startlingly loud): LET'S GET IT ON!!! Alright!! Go Devils!! Go
Devils!! Let's go Devils!!

Sweden already called it. Just be warned that you will be constantly beratted by Stein. Even though he was born in NJ he has fallen off of the turnip truck and is a Rags fan. Saying that he hates the Devils is an understatement. There is some clown troll named JoiseyDevil or something. Don't ever include yourself as being a supoorter of his and you will be straight. You will find very quickly that there is a home grown rivalry between the Canes and the Devils. I don't know if this is seen as such in New Jersey, but it sure is here. I eagerly await news of your first conversation with a hardcore (probably bandwagon) Hurricanes fan who is blown away and angered when you inform them that their adopted son Mike Commadore was once a dirty Devils player!

P.S.- Don't look in my photo gallery.

wow, i'm pumped that people care about the sport here. didn't expect such rabid replies or so many.

phish: rock n roll.

nut: i just wanted to pay homage to the late team. even there's no holdovers the Whale still exists in spirit... and in NHL 94, the greatest video game.

brass: awesome. i'm actually a horrible ice player, but decent at roller, but this is mainly because roller is cheaper to play. i came down here for the school of arch, just started grad school. and yes, i do play, dying to get into some games, but my gear is all back home. i'll keep checking for games next semester when i get my gear.

coolguy: nowhere in my post did i say that all canes fans just picked up hockey or just became fans. it was a mere jest so take it easy. i basically threw an underhand lobb out there to call the Devils the New Jersey Rockies, sorry you missed.

vulcan: thanks for being repeating coolguy. i almost forgot what he said 3 words ago.

clalias: puddy is the man

legatic: carolina had the deeper team this year and they wanted it more that series. there's no doubts there. devils played flat until game 4. then failed to show up again in game 5. although the announcers did suck him off, give the dude some credit. 3 cups, 1 gold, 2 vezinas. ward's good, but still has a lot to prove and a long way to go to catch up.

vinyl: you prob don't like brodeur in the same way people hate tom brady... he wins and is gifted. but yes, canes outhit, outskated and outshot us.

dammit: rock n roll

roman: i'm not here to win the acceptance of some angry dudes to join a club. just looking for people who like hockey. but no, actually, there's more of philly-nj and nyr-nj rivalries up by me. carolina was a team we didn't give much credit to, and they showed up. but i still don't consider them a rival. not that i don't despise them now, but i never understood the hatred (other than the devils taking home cups). but seriously, carolina has beat us handily the last 2 times in the playoffs, they just won the friggin cup, and they're fans are angry?!

I recognize his talent and the fact that he wins, even without his precious Niedermayer and Stevens. My problem is that people act like he's a successor to Roy, but he's never shown the ability to drag a team through the playoffs like Roy did. Martin Brodeur is a great goalie, but he's not a money goalie, and Roy's three Conn Smythes say much more to me than the career wins record that Brodeur will probably snag before he retires does.

Hatred points are marginal hits on

1. Ron Francis
2. Shane Willis

plus the two hard-fought series prior to this year.

For what it's worth, though, I can recognize that Stevens was an amazing player, but I'll boo Keith Primeau until I die.

My reply wasn't meant to imply that I was mad that you made a remark regarding the bandwagon fans down here. I know we've had a lot of them, and I only hate them until they become regular fans. Because often times the bandwagon fans are some rednecks that make us look bad, like the Buffalo inbred trash that makes their fans look bad.
I really do hate when people -- not necessarily you - but especially the sportscaster continually refer to the Hurricanes as the Whalers or go back to times when they were in Hartford, its never mentioned towards any other organization.

So far you don't seem like one of thedoucehbag NJ fans - typically they're quick and easy to spot. So - If you are for hockey, then I am happy.

vinyl:
well, i think Brodeur is the successor to Roy. i think they will both go down in NHL history as the greatest goalies to play the game. but about dragging a team to win a cup, Roy's 3 cups were all on very strong teams. a deep habs team and two very talented avs teams. yea, he played amazingly against the Devs in 2001, but to say he carried the Avs (sakic, FORSBERG, tanguay, drury, hejduk, blake, BOURQUE, et al) on his back is hardly what happened. it actually never happens, and giguere proved that. JS could only carry the ducks for so long; if they had a better team, they might've won in 2003. roy played solidly, intensely and rarely made a mistake, which makes him a great, but brodeur has all those qualities, wins and statistics to back it up. marty also has won huge games that don't get credit because they weren't showstoppers. he just was unsolvable. 2000 EC finals game 5,6,7 vs Philly/2003 game 7's vs OTT and ANA. also, roy's 96 smythe was where they steamrolled everyone, and i don't remember him leading them to the cup singlehandedly. in 2001, bourque, sakic or forsberg could've easily won the smythe. you have to take trophies with a grain of salt just as regular season stats.

i hated primeau until his post-concussion syndrome kicked in, because i remember how flyers fans called stevens a useless vegetable when he first got it. the shit's pretty serious, so i hope he gets better... so i can hate him again.

coolguy:
it's cool man. or rather, it's cool, guy. bandwagon fans are everywhere, there were plenty that jumped aboard the devils in 95. but generally it is harder for northerners (areas where ponds freeze) to believe that people can be real hockey fans where water doesn't freeze. it's basically a stereotype, but it's cool to hear some fans that know their stuff, even though it's essentially a new sport to the culture here. at the same time it's prob refreshing for you southerners to know that not all people from NJ are rude, hairy guidos from bayonne. not to act like i know it all, but you won't know what a douchebag fan is until your team is a rival of the Flyers. philly fans in general are the shittiest.

and yea, i'm here for hockey. i think the east will win again this year, and that parity is already apparent. devils won't be a guaranteed powerhouse anymore, and i really think the sens blew every chance they had to win the cup. if they didn't acquire heatley i'd count them out altogether.

these posts are too long. sorry.

First of all, Roy has four Cups. '86, '93, '96, and '01. '01 was a ridiculous team, and Roy got the Smythe because he was nothing but solid all the way through. In '96 the Avs steamrolled everyone, but Sakic got the Smythe that year. In '93 and '86, Roy literally dragged the Habs through games that they quite simply weren't good enough to win. In the '93 playoffs, he won TEN STRAIGHT GAMES IN OVERTIME. In '86, the Habs defense was truly porous at times. Look at the end of Game 5 of the finals, when the Habs failed to pick up anyone in their own zone for minutes on end in the third and almost handed the game away.

coolguy: i think if ohio is further north at all, it might be by 1-3 degrees latitude. shit, you do like hockey more than me. haha.

stein: i blame my mild retardation on all the smokestacks and sewage plants as you approach the meadowlands arena.

nut: your profile has the brass bonanza. you rule. everyone go listen if you don't know what i'm talking about.

vinyl: 86 slipped my mind for some reason. and as far as that year goes, all i really knew about it was that he was a rookie and he won the cup. and that the habs had lemieux and richer. not very good at remembering it if i didn't actually see it, since i was 4. but you are right, roy has won way more clutch games (OTs) in the playoffs. marty always seems to choke when it comes to OT. it's either he shuts a team down completely and the devs win w/ no prob, or he loses in OT. however, he has held off opponents in a lot of close games in the 3rd period, allowing the devs to win the game late.

I'm still shocked that there are big hockey fans down here. The problem is that they're few and far between (though after reading vinylbandit and others' posts, you'll see that at least a handful frequent TWW).

Last year there were a lot of Hurricanes fans, but god knows they didn't know shit about hockey.

Oversaturation of the hockey market combined with the fact that they were boring as hell to watch.

I've never really gotten the opportunity to play organized hockey growing up in small town North Carolina, but I started following the NHL back around 94 or so and have been following it pretty closely ever since. Some of the other kids in my neighborhood started getting into playing roller hockey from time to time. I started pulling for Quebec since it was the most random team I could think of for a person from NC to pull for around the time Forsberg first appeared in their lineup. When they moved to Colorado and started actually winning I kept following them, but Carolina getting it's own team and Forsberg jumping ship to Philly made me switch my affiliations to the Canes (yes I realize Forsberg only recently left). Fuck Philly.

stein called it. the rangers have been around for a century, the islanders and flyers for about a half, and this is all within a 100-some-odd mile radius. throw the devils in there 24 years ago within the 25 mile radius containing both the rangers and islanders, and you're pretty much tapping the newest potential hockey fans you can get, not a lot of history or tradition to inherit. in the end canes fans today are really the same as what devils fans were in 1990. but admittingly, devs were prob boring to watch for everyone but devs fans.

malik, you completely missed my point. all i can derive from you is that you are a canes-homer, and not a hockey fan. and also that you take anything anyone says out of context to spin it to your favor. i didn't say i liked nascar. you're from nc. traditional nc sports are: basketball, football and nascar. all i was saying was hockey fans down here are as rare as nascar fans in the nyc/nj/philly area. thanks for reinforcing my opinion that amongst canes fans there are only a handful of open-minded smart people in a sea of invalids. and don't get me wrong, devils fans... all sports fans for that matter, can be jackoffs too.

and to quote stein: "I'm still shocked that there are big hockey fans down here."
so, malik, stein basically has stated the same point i did, but why didn't you call him a shitbag? because he's a canes fan, and he's right. you're a homer.
