Here's my situation. I used to work at Enteprise, and am still on a very part-time (1-2 Sat.'s a month) basis with them. I left the office that I was at because the boss was a bitch and the job was burning me out.

I got on with another company, local outfit, doing Verizon Wireless sales. Well shit has been slow, and I was promised more money than I have been getting. Basically I am getting shit on some of the money and then the insurance is like 2.5x higher and doesn't cover shit. My old coverage with ERAC was 100/paycheck and covered everything on Gods green earth. My current one is $290/check and just denied $600+ in labwork for my wife who is fucking pregnant! This isn't bullshit stuff, she is 11 weeks pregnant.

My dilemma is, the office has a really great manager now and the pay would be better since they got raises after I left, and my insurance would drop back majorly. They have said they could accomodate me on my classes I am taking, but I certainly don't intend to make renting cars a career. The other job is cake, and better be for as little as I seem to be bringing home. Seems like an open and shut case to go back. Sounds like I should, right? I'll be working more hours again though, dealing with more bullshit again from customers, and generally not enjoying work like I do now. But I will be bringing home a lot more.

So I'm pretty well decided to roll back. But how do I break it to my current boss so she's not a total psychobitch to me? I don't want her to think I'm not grateful for the chance they gave me, but a lot of my job is commission and shit just ain't turning out like they said it would, plus their insurance blows. I've only been with this company about 3 months, and I like working there, but damn if I can't pay the bills then it ain't cutting it. So how do ya'll suggest letting her know?

A 1 on 1 where you mention that you're grateful for the chance they gave you, but you have to look out for your family. You could also give them a big notice period to make sure they aren't in any bind. As long as it’s done all official & business like, and your letter of resignation is nice, then I don’t see how they could complain.

Could you increase the number of hours at your part time job to balance it out so that you keep the job you like? I mean if your hours have to go up anyways, could you do it without sacrificing the cake job?

*I start my first full time job ever tomorrow, so I don't have the experience to be giving job advice yet

Nah the part-time thing is just on Saturdays. My cake job is m-f day job. The Enterprise job is M-F days only and then Sat. morning. Thats where the overlap is and thats how I've been able to still technically continue to be an Enterprise employee.

Pick option C. Both jobs sound terrible. You didn't major in history or anything like that, did you?

I'm still going to school for Networking Technology. Unfortunately not all of us have the luxury of going fulltime for four years. Some are married, have kids, etc. and have to work to support your family AND still go to school at the same time.

Nah, there are a couple trolls like Lowjack who frown upon others who choose a different and ... "less difficult" path in life. Be damned if ever get any nice/useful advice out of them.

Given that you are going back to school for something more long-term, I would be thinking in the short term. The simple thing to tell you boss is that you looked at your finances, and you simply can't stay at that job without significant incentive to do so. There's another opportunity that will better support your family at the moment, and that takes ultimate priority. Deal with the crap job for a few years, and look forward to finishing your classes. Just make sure the job and classes don't take away too much time from the family. Career/Classes can be done at any time ... first steps are something that are a one time thing.

Have you looked into going to school full time and working parttime and getting benefits through the university? It's actually not that bad.

My wife and I were married while in school. Neither of us worked the first year and only I worked my last semester. We ended up with about $11k in student loans. We used the insurance through our universities NCSU and UNCGay. Although we didn't have a baby on the way then.

How many hours do you have left? I have seen people go to school fulltime AND work fulltime. It is doable. Deliving pizzas can actually make you a good amount of money.

Giving Verison Wireless a huge notice will probably do you NO good. In fact they may just let you go. Honestly you are probably just a number to them. Just mention to your boss that your wife is having a baby and you need some more $ like promised but have a fallback plan if it doesn't work out.

I'm just an authorized retailer, so I don't do shit for Verizon but sell their phones. Its a small family-owned company, and thats probably why the insurance is shit.

And I am thinking about doing ECU Online next semester so that I can just do my work in my off time and still work fulltime. We'll see. I think I'm just gonna have a sitdown with my boss and explain to her that I have an offer to go back, explain the finances and say that unless she can match what they are offering, then I'm going to have to accept the other offer.

you might want to look at the insurance thing closer. My wife is pregnant and I changed jobs while she was pregnant and my new insurance won't cover my wife's pregnance since its considered "pre-existing" and I couldn't get any outside insurance to cover her either. Def look into that.

Have you looked into going to school full time and just maxxing out student loans and taking advantage of financial aid? It might get you guys by plus get your degree. I really think if you make school a priority, the school can make it work financially.

You must of both been without insurance for at least 60 days in between jobs, because if you had insurance and you went to another company with their insurance within the 60 days, they have to cover pre existing conditions(if within the 60 days) It is the law.
