If you had the choice between:

01 M3 less than 50k on it

or

02 S4 less than 50k on it

Which one? The obvious difference is the AWD, but I wouldn't drive either in snow.

Price difference is about 10k

anything is a big performance upgrade from a camry.

are you looking for performance only or luxry/performance? judging by your two choices i'd say both and i'd also say go with the E46

unless you want 4 doors

^^Yup

Just trying to justify the 10k to myself

They both seem like kick ass cars, and I plan on test driving them both soon....just wanted to hear some people give some opinions from their experiences

For those that know.....did the S4 have any of the problems that the 00-01 A4's endured?

Go for an '81 Buick Electra wagon. You'll go all day without seeing one of those either, and you can run right over, or through, either the MS or S4 with little problem. And it's probably $30K cheaper.

Or maybe a small horse named "Domino" But only if you aren't concerned about emissions. Parking would certainly be easier.

I've found some good, solid, strong runners in the $125 range. They're a little faster if you bust out the front and rear glass for better aerodyBAMics.

man, i used to love this one pony name "dynamite" that came to the fair every year.

it was one of my favorite events as a child, and every year i would always attempt to untie him during my ride and take him home. of course the carnie fuckers always stopped me.

one year, dynamite didn't come to the fair. the carnies told me he had "gone to pony heaven". it was probably like my worst time at the fair ever. then i had some fried dough on the way to the joey chitwood thrill show, and then all was right in my world again.

so yeah, i say get a minature horse or a pony. name it dynamite for me.

RS4 (which is a dream car for me) is more expensive than the M3

starts at like $66,000 and goes way up from there

^ Dude, they are all the same price:

Honda NSX: 80K
Audi RS4: 80K
BMW M3: 80K

\/ The new M3 will be around 70K I bet.

80k? the RS4 starts at $66,000, but you'll see them for 72,000 on average with options.

E92 M3 will be probably around $50,000-55,000 for base model add another $10,000 for all the options.

they aren't all 80k

man the m3 looks tempting.........its such a nice car

but if I get the S4 I could save myself the 10k and buy a nice TV

Anyone care to discuss the performance differences? I can't justifiy the 10k just because its a bimmer

I'm curious as to how the S4 is $10k cheaper? Is it just typical Audi depreciation, b/c I'm pretty sure their base prices when new were very close.

^^^^

If you look at pricing for an 01-02 S4 and an 01 M3, its about a 10k difference

I know that the 01 S4 with the B5 body had lots of engineering issues, and would be a bitch to maintain, where I haven't heard all the much about the M3's.

luxory and performance....pretty clear to me.

a STi or Evo won't do for him because they are all performance and no luxory.

M3/S4 perfect combo of both...

if you can think of any other car with that then suggest it.

i'd consider the S4 slightly more GT crusierish and the M3 slightly more track capable. Although both are a good bit of both

^^^Maybe after a while, but I would say not in the immediate future.

Possibly taking it to Stage 2

I do realize that the M3 has more aftermarket parts than the S4.

Audi's are awesome cars, smooth rides, AWD, turbo...

M3 is sweet too, and a bit smaller, but with the turbo, a chip would get you an extra 100 Foot pounds pretty easily, and the AWD would really let you take advantage of it. And its cheaper? No contest.

These were the definitions I was going by:
Stage 1 (adds around 50-60 fwhp) - performance "chip", which is merely a chip that is soldered into the car's ECU to essentially increase boost pressure and retard timing (giving the car SIGNIFICANT performance gains). To have your ECU modified in this way, you send it to a tuner (GIAC, APR, AMS/Abt, and MTM are widely regarded as the best) and they will modify it and send it back. This costs anywhere from $500-800 depending on the company. Different tuner chips give the car different power curves, so it's important to do your research before selecting which one you want. What most recommend is that you just buy a spare ECU from the tuner to have them modify. That way you have a complete unit you can simply swap out in case you need to go back to stock form. Spare ECUs run about $500 new.

Stage 2 (adds 5-15 fwhp) - just add an aftermarket exhaust to your chip (any will do). The true dual exhausts typically give the most performance gains. Cost: $600-2000 depending on manufacturer. Most do this mod simply for the sound. Here is an AW tech article on exhaust systems: http://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng28.shtml

But the question remains, M3 or S4, performance wise, and how bad are the 02 S4's really??? Can they be that bad?

and the s4's awd will probably help keep you facing the right way when you push over the limit trying to search for it.

^^ B5 S4's

Bad =

#1. Turbo failure
Bypass valves (BPVs)
Throttle body boot (TBB)
F-Hose
#2. Transmission 1st-2nd gear slider problems (6sp only)
#3. Mass air flow (MAF) sensor trouble
And some other issues

Anyone had experience with the B5 S4?

a B5 S4 can be a nightmare if you get a shoddy example, it can also be a fantastic car. plan on some things breaking, & get software. you shouldn't need to send your ecu off with local apr & giac dealers in the area.
