That will be the day when finally, someone in the middle east will be able to stand up against western aggression. We love to speak of freedom all the time and national freedom is on the march here folks!

Zionists and American imperialists do not want this to happen because it will mean the end of their dominance over the middle east and its people.

Quote :
"An Iranian bomb will mean that for the first time an enemy country - and Iran is an enemy country by all definitions - will acquire the capability to inflict a very heavy blow on Israel."

Israel will finally have to use fair means of diplomacy (usediplomacy at all!) in the middle east. This will gain leverage for the Palestinians and anyone else Israel decides to pour their aggression onto. (cough Lebanon cough)

Here is why there is no stopping it

Ultimately, everything is controlled by the superpowers and with each day, the U.S. is losing control over this situation. China and Russia are investing heavily in Iran and their future depends more and more on Iran being there.

Quote :
"If the negotiations with Iran fail, the next step could be to refer the matter to the UN Security Council, but it is not at all clear that the council will impose sanctions on Iran. While the Americans and the Europeans will support such a move, the position of the Russians and the Chinese is not at all clear and either could veto such a resolution. And if they don't veto, are there real, substantial sanctions that could be imposed on Iran?
Furthermore, both China and especially Russia are important partners of Iran, especially in the economic field. The Russians are investing a lot of money in Iran, and are building the nuclear plant in Bushehr. The Chinese are supplying the Iranian army with military material and technology. In addition, both Russia and China regard American attempts to contain Iranian nuclear efforts as manifestation of American patronage over the Middle East, and they want to contain that too."

As most probobly know, American cannot afford to cross China economically, a fallout with China would obliterate the American economy.

China becoming the economic power of the world depends heavily on an Iranian political alliance. China and Russia will continue to watch over Iran as if it were their own child.

So how much can America do militarily without provoking china and Russia? A quick shock strike on Iranian nuclear facilities is the only military option that the us could ever afford to be involved in. Israel likely, won’t do anything the us doesn’t want them to do and the us does not want to spoil relations with China

Quote :
"There is very little to compare when considering a possible military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities and the case of the Israeli attack on the Iraqi nuclear plant in 1981. The Iranian site is much better protected. It's not a matter of one plant, as in the Iraqi case, but a series of three or four important sites. Some of them are deep underground, and the Iranians may have some secret sites we don't even know about. Furthermore, even if Iran's known sites are destroyed, it might take Iran a relative short time to rebuild them?
There are other difficulties. Any country that attacks Iran will have to pay a political price, especially Israel. Even those who may benefit from such an attack will condemn it. In addition, Iran can respond to an attack, unlike Iraq in 1981. It can respond, for example, by using Hizballah to fire its large rocket system against the north of Israel. It can try to disrupt the oil flow from the Gulf area. It can act against American targets in the Middle East and the Gulf area. And Iran says explicitly that if Israel attacks Iranian nuclear sites, it will respond by using its new operational missile, the Shihab III, which can reach Israeli targets."

With that said, there is not much that can be done by the us militarily (shy of ending relations with china and Russia) to prevent iran from gaining nuclear weapons. The Iranian program is being conducted in a place we know but exact copies of the program are being conducted simultaneously in at least 3 other secret areas.

Don’t be fooled people. Iran does not want to nuke anybody. They will not use this weapon unless they are being invaded. The main reason for building one is security and political leverage.

Quote :
"However, even if Iran is not going to use the bomb against anybody including Israel, there are still very negative implications from its acquisition of the bomb. First, if Iran acquires the bomb, it will encourage other countries in the Middle East to join this nuclear arms race, especially Egypt, and perhaps Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Algeria, and Syria. It would be difficult for a country like Egypt, the leader of the Arab world, to stay out of this circle.
Secondly, an Iran with the bomb is going to be a more aggressive country. This could be seen, for example, in encouragement of Hizballah to initiate new attacks against Israel. It could be in the field of oil prices. With the safety net of a nuclear capability, Iran might behave differently and more aggressively.
Finally, Iran with the bomb is going to be the cornerstone of the radical camp in the Muslim world and in the Middle East as well. More moderate countries like Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf states will have to accommodate themselves more than in the past to this new situation in which a central radical country will have the bomb."

Iran with the bomb will bring the entire Arab world closer together and will start a collective increase in the power of the other countries as well as further polarize them against Israel. Iran’s goal is to destroy Israel but they know that nuking Israel would only destroy themselves so they have the grand plan to destroy Israel politically and economically.

They will aid the military/industrial buildup of all Arab allies.

Meanwhile, Iran continues to become more and more prepared for their worst case scenario- a Zionist or american invasion. By 2008 Iran will have at least 500k highly trained suicidal warriors, 13-15 million troops (already is the largest in the world), a legitimate air force complemented with the shafaq (a stealth subsonic aircraft capable of causing even the us big trouble) hundreds of thousands of ground fired missiles capable of tanking out the west’s most modern tanks, ships, and fighter aircraft and increased imports of modern weaponry from Russia and most of all France.

By 2008, an invasion of Iran will be too costly to carry out.

when you quote stuff you have to provide a source

and sanctions would hit iran pretty hard, so there is no reason to jump to discussing military actions yet

and is the 3 year timeline provided by the same people that said iraq had wmd's?

they could do that, and oil prices would trade at over $100 a barrel
but it would hurt them too, and would only be a short-term thing

this is old but kindof explains that

I'll answer using my own totally ascientific, wholly questionable methods to come up with probabilities:

1) Odds of conventional war between Israel and a Syrian-Iranian alliance...

within 3 years: 70%
within 5 years: 80%
within 10 years: 95%

2) Odds of conventional war between Israeli-U.S. alliance and a Syrian-Iranian alliance...

within 3 years: 60%
within 5 years: 50%
within 10 years: 60%

3) Odds of limited nuclear war between Israel and a Syrian-Iranian alliance...

within 3 years: 25%
within 5 years: 30%
within 10 years: 35%

4) Odds of limited nuclear war between Israeli-U.S. alliance and a Syrian-Iranian alliance...

within 3 years: 5%
within 5 years: 15%
within 10 years: 25%

we will never have to find out if Iran will nuke someone. Our government has stated that Iran must not aquire nukes. Therefore, whether you like it or not we will engage militarily at some point and time if they don't stop enrichment. I'm not sure when it will be but it should be in the next five years if they continue defying the security council.

THE SECUIRTY COUNCIL, which is made up of the most powerful countries in the world. You really think the world will let them build wmd? Hell no. We are allready being pounded on a daily basis about how much of a threat Iran is. If you don't think Iran is a threat to our security then go live there. See how they feel about Americans. Good luck.

^^^^i don't think the odds of nuclear war are quite as high as you do, but a lot of the parties in question are pretty damned crazy.

^^^^^
you left out the 2nd half of that quote:

Quote :
"The main reason for building one is security and political leverage."

Of course they're not going to simply nuke anyone the day after they get it finished. They're kinda crazy, but they know that would be a suicide move. However, Iran having political leverage associated with nuclear capability is not ok.

I wonder if people during the cold war also had the ridiculous idea that the soviets were building nukes to use them.

In fact, I can count on one finger the number of countries who have built nukes for something more than deterrence.

cathocutie, you seem to be happy about the prospect of Iran acquiring nuclear capability. If you are, then I suggest you give up whatever lifestyle you enjoy here and move there. I'm sure they would be glad to have you, and you'd be glad to be rid of this "zionist" lifestyle you are living.
In other words, get the fuck out of this country and stop breathing my air if you think that the measures we take to preserve our lifestyle are not in line.

First of all, let's realize I made up those numbers based on my own wholly unscientific and illogical impressions of the situation. However informed I might be, I'd be retarded to claim I know enough about the billion or so factors involved in what would cause the conflict required to call my estimates accurate.

Now, I'll answer your question: No.

Five years from now, we will be in the waning years of a presidential term. If it hasn't happened within the first 3 starting now, I doubt it'll happen in the two following that. However, once the election is over, regardless of the victor, I would say that odds are quite a bit higher that they'll involve themselves in the war.

Quote :
"theDuke866: i don't think the odds of nuclear war are quite as high as you do, but a lot of the parties in question are pretty damned crazy."

They're pretty damned crazy today. I'd argue that as the US becomes more politically marginalized by Russia and China (among the only coherent thoughts in the first post, recall Olmert's striking "go it alone" comment), the "crazy factor" and the "desperation factor" within Israel and Syria-Iran will begin to feed one another more dramatically.

Mind, I called it a limited nuclear war for a reason. I'm becoming less convinced we're going to see a true Armageddon or nuclear holocaust out of all this, despite the best efforts of both sides.

I think they should have the basic rights of any nation and all of a sudden I want to live there?

I'm not living a zionist lifestyle....where did that come from?

Preserving our lifestyle is fine. Forcing our lifestyle upon anyone who doesn't currently live/believe in it is wrong, and you've been wickedly duped if you seriously think anything in the middle east (post cold war) has anything to do with "preserving our lifestyle". They should have the right to preserve their own lifestyle and thats what they're doing right now and what we're not stopping.

Also,

ya...Israel would lose more in the process of disarming Iran than they would having a city nuked. I hope they understand that.
