There is something that makes noise just above my fireplace. When I opened the flue, it started growling. So, its not a bird. Its a very weak growl. What could it be? Its driving my cats crazy. Im not interested in killing it, just getting rid of it.

not a good living arrangement if it is stuck. your only other option is to get some type of equally sized thing and push its ass out.

Not if it fell in and got injured. And regardless, starting a fire would be too much trouble.
^^ I will if I cant lure it out and trap it myself.

youre gonna have to let it die. this EXACT thing happened to me about 3 weeks ago. everyone i called, animal control, wildlife people, even pest removal experts (anyone i could get ahold of) would not come out to get this squirrel out of my fireplace. i was told that it would be a waste of a trip, because if it could not climb out, they certainly wouldn't be able to remove it without incident. if the animal was able to climb out, it would have done it already. something is keeping it from doing so... it'll dehydrate in about 5 or 6 days, and you can remove it then. just block off your fireplace so it can't get into your house, especially since you have cats. 9/9/2006 6:26:47 PM |

it keeps jumping down though, but it keeps getting spooked and jumping back up. letting it die of dehydration would be a pain in the ass, the noise is anoying. 9/9/2006 6:31:37 PM |
BrickTop All American 4508 Posts user info edit post |
well here are your options:
a) find someone to come out and remove it. you'd likely spend an hour trying to get someone, as well as up to $150 once they get there. if the squirrel is in the chimney, i'm not sure how theyd physically get it out. think of how fast the critters are. i can't imagine any expert that's good enough to catch a squirrel. so, the animal actually getting loose in your house is a real possibility. even if they can't do anything, i'm pretty sure they charge dinero just to make the trip.
b) let it die and deal with the noise for the meantime. at some point it will become too weak to continue jumping around in your chimney.
c) try to remove it yourself. i was told that if you open a door, and create a path to the door with chairs, pillows, blankets, etc, the squirrel's instincts will likely take it directly to the door. the door should be close for obvious reasons, and please realize this isn't 100% guaranteed to work.

Wow, Joeanon, I'm amused you'd be ballsy enough to post something like that when you're currently trying to get rid of some ferrets. How would you feel if your owner just sold you to someone else? You're not thinking about what's best for the animal, if you're going by your own bullshit and assuming they have souls/feelings.
God, I hate these lofty PETA bitches.

I'm opposed to treating them the same as humans. I'm also opposed to linking this animal issue to being in college through some bizarre argument about money.

Get a squirrel trap for like $20 at walmart or find someone who has one. Just set it up, put some nuts in it and BAM. It's humane so you can retain your hippy status.
That or feel free to climb up on your roof, remove your chimney cap/whatever is up there, and drop a long rope with some knots every so often space down the chimney. If it isn't hurt it should be a be able to climb up the rope easy. Make sure to tie one end to a brick or something heavier than what's down there and leave that end on the top of your roof so the rope doesn't fall in. This also serves the purpose so that you don't have to sit up on the damn roof all day holding a rope. It sounds corny but it'll make it easier for the squirrel to have something to grasp as opposed to brick/block walls.
