make a long story short / someone sprayed fire extinguisher down my gas tank
the car has not been cranked so there should be no engine damage
beatsunc says this Quote : | "
you dont need a mechanic.
what you need is a five gallon gas can and a siphon pump. just replace the contaminated gas with fresh gas." |
any other tips so i dont have to take my car to a mechanic / or would that be the best? message_topic.aspx?topic=4316129/10/2006 11:34:09 AM |

Pretty much. Just suck out what you can, pour in fresh, maybe suck that out as well. Then fill it up. And clean off your car. 9/10/2006 12:36:05 PM |

thanks for the serious help i appreciate it
im just afraid that siphoning the gas out will not get all the chemical from the extinguisher out and the tank will need to be flushed
it i can just siphon it out i will not have to pay to have it towed rent a car pay a mechanic 9/10/2006 2:04:12 PM |

if it was a dry chemical extinguisher (you'll see white powdery residue around the tank filler neck), then nothing will happen. just run the car until it shuts off. replace the fuel filter and continue about your day. 9/10/2006 4:13:01 PM |

^What Brian said. I don't think that shit dissolves in gas...and I'd just run and replace the fuel filter a time or two. 9/10/2006 5:08:06 PM |

you sure it won't mess up the pump? with these in-tank pumps you can't just stick a filter between the tank and the fuel pump 9/10/2006 5:48:55 PM |

my mechanic says that if i want to avoid any long term damage i need to get it flushed b/c there is no telling what some of those chemicals might do when mixed with the gasoline
anyone have a clue about how much it would cost to flush the tank 9/11/2006 11:29:33 AM |

To drop it and clean it out is probably 2 hours labor. Think $70 average an hour. 9/11/2006 11:43:09 AM |

mechanics have been telling me it would be close to 5+ hours of labor and it would cost b/w 700-1000.00 dollars
my mech. back home said he could do it for around 300 9/11/2006 11:58:23 AM |

Check to see if there is a drain plug on the bottom of the tank. If so, drain the gas. put some more in, slosh it around a bit and drain that, then fill it up.

well, he is a mechanic and not a firefighter so how in the hell would he know what a dry chem extinguisher would do if mixed with gas?
i'll put it to you this way: gasoline is a hydrocarbon which means it does not mix with water which is the purpose of a dry chemical extinguisher. you spray a dry chem. extinguisher at a gasoline fire and it blankets the fire removing all oxygen. if it mixed with gas, then it wouldn't put out the fire. i don't forsee any problems other than a clogged fuel filter by leaving the gas in there.9/11/2006 6:27:48 PM |

i really wouldnt be worried about the fuel filter or pump because those are cheap compared to what the chemicals could do to things like seals, piston rings, cylinders, etc.
safest bet is to flush it 9/11/2006 6:40:40 PM |
