The following is an excerpt from a recent article in the _Nubian Message_: "The media is a source of information and entertainment. Because people rely on media sources, it has a strong and perpetual influence on their perception of African Americans as a people. Due to the negative representation, African Americans are now geared toward establishing and maintaining their own media sources" (Tempestt Richardson, staff writer). Perhaps Richardson was referring primarily to fictional portrayals of African Americans. If that is the case, I would agree with some of what was written.

Concerning African Americans in the local television news media, on Labor Day of this month, the abovementioned minority group enjoyed 100 percent representation in the news anchor positions on the local Big Three stations. The following were the anchors on that day: Gerald Owens and Pam Saulsby, WRAL; Melanie Sanders, NBC 17 (by the way, the meteorologist on that channel was Geneen Anderson); and Mike Dunston and Tisha Powell, WTVD.

I support proper representation of African Americans on the TV news and elsewhere. I submit that, in the case of TV news in the Triangle, the goal has been achieved--and then some.

You would think that an article in a black publication talking about blacks in the media would be edited at least once.

the nubian message has been dogged by plagiarism charges and poor editing for the past 6 years now. that's why I led the charge to have it disbanded until competent leadership could be found. Sadly, i was shouted down as racist.

Yes, what you all have posted IS interesting. But the point of the post was the significant representation of African American TV news anchors in the Triangle area. What about that?
