This pisses me off. There should be serious, massive consequences to both him and the school.

Like a year's suspension or something, and Bush should be made to pay insane amounts of money -- to none other than a general scholarship fund for the Cal Bears

^ Why USC? They did nothing wrong as far as we know except not knowing about it (same as the NCAA) and the individuals in question had no relationship with the school or its boosters.

NCAA is gonna whine and cry, but there's nothing they can do.

Okay, but forcing Reggie to pay $10 million to build some sweet upgrades to the Cal Bears' staduim and another $10 mil for general scholarship would be lollerskates

you have to punish USC whether they knew about bush or not. There is no way to make the distinction that someone did or did not know in the whole organization

i would think that at State if Mario's family was poor and lived in a crappy house... then all of a sudden they're living in a $3/4 million house - someone would have a suspision at NC State. It wouldn't be like no one would have an idea

if they dont punish USC then another school could get away with paying players and saying they didn't know about it

isnt that the point of an investigation? to figure out if it was known?

im all about going forward with an investigation, but i think its ridiculous to punish them if they truely didn't have anything to do with it.

according to the article on yahoo that has a lot of evidence of wrong doing, it appears that the running backs coach did know a little something. USC should be punished. Tommy Amaker (sp?) and Michigan bball players were punished for things that none of them did too.

UNC and Duke are untouchable in basketball.

Remember Sean May jokingly referring to the $10k champayne bottle that he got from an alum on National TV after the NC win?

I don't remember him saying how much it cost, and he said it was from a teammate.

No, it'll strip USC of their awards, and could possibly cost Bush his Heisman. Nobody would win it, Bush would just be unable to vote in future Heisman contests. USC could possibly face probation. The extent of the damages actually done to Bush would be repeated proverbial slaps in the face...

just like they didn't do jack to Ohio State.

USC should face some sort of consequences. I have a hard time believing when stuff like this happens, the coaches and everyone with the school boosters are innocent. Someone had to have known.

No way USC would lose their NC.

If anything he was probably paid his junior year, when they didn't win the NC anyway.

^^I was wondering about that recently myself. You know the NCAA though, USC makes too much money.

^No, some of the expenses paid for were suits for the family and getting to the Heisman ceremony if I'm not mistaken. They were definitely made senior year and they won the championship his sophomore year and junior year. Senior year they lost to Texas.

^^ Sr year would be this year for Bush. It was during his Jr year I'm pretty sure, last year. Who cares thoguh? Every school in the country does this stuff. Ohio State is probably the worst of the bunch. Check out this article out of Ohio State. Sure, it is old but it doesn't cast tOSU in the best light..

Well then I'm still waiting for the NCAA to hand down sanctions to Duke for the Myron Piggie episode even though there was NO way of them knowing. You can't hold a school accountable for an outsiders actions. That is unfair IMO. You can give players Moms jobs they aren't qualified for though!!!

from the Ohio St. article

Quote :
"IN SIX academic quarters at Ohio State, Maldonado had earned a decent number of credits (his 57 were the equivalent of about 40 at a semester school). He compiled a 2.3 GPA and had never lost his eligibility. But his coursework included four credits for playing football, three for Tressel's Coaching Football class, 10 for remedial reading, 10 for remedial math and three for Issues Affecting Student Athletes. Six other credits wouldn't transfer because he earned D's in two classes. Maldonado couldn't understand how he had earned only 17 transferable credits in two years. Even today the number pinballs around his head. "What kind of degree can you get from Ohio State if none of your classes count at other colleges?" he asks.

Not much of one, according to The Drake Group, an NCAA watchdog. Members of the organization refer to schools like Ohio State as "football factories" that offer soft courses designed to keep players on the field. "The purpose isn't to educate and graduate," says Drake Group associate director David Ridpath. "They're eligibility mills."

The NCAA can't take away USC's NC, because the NCAA doesn't award NCs in football.

^That quote destroys the credibility of that article for me. tOSU is easily one of the top research universities in the world. If football players at tOSU are getting shitty degrees and taking worthless classes, that's their own fault. Yea, I'm sure tOSU has "soft courses" that players take, but so does every other school in the country.

"Friedgen was impressed. He had seen his share of transfers over the years, but none with such a barren transcript. "It wasn't his fault," the coach says. "They had him in a bunch of classes that he shouldn't have been in."

Maldonado says the curriculum was not his idea. "Over there, they just put you in classes," he says. "I let them take care of my schedule.

I wish I wouldn't have."
"

Well, read the article further. Sure it could be just a vengeful kid pissed because he didn't get a shot at Ohio St. but there are just too many of these stories out there. And don't try and compare a University's academics overall to teh academics of the football team. If you don't think they get catered to, you're fooling yourself..

** FWIW, Ohio State was the 28th rated research university in the country last year. USC was far ahead of it..

It's well known that the college system in the US is the best in the world. Ohio state is one of the top research universities in the US and because of this, the world.

http://ed.sjtu.edu.cn/rank/2006/ARWU2006_Top100.htm - #66 in regards to all universities in the world (research or otherwise)
http://thecenter.ufl.edu/research2005.pdf - #36 research university in the US

tOSU is a football factory and a brilliant research school. I wasn't saying either wasn't true, however parts of that article make it seem like tOSU is JUST a football factory and that players not getting a good education is completely the fault of the university.

In either case, none of this has anything to do with Reggie Bush...
